There are entirely too many MLS teams.
They need to get on the same page as the rest of the world and form 3 divisions, 16-18 teams in each division, with promotion and relegation.

American sports fans who don't know much about soccer outside the US wouldn't take well to relegation at all. To have a chance, MLS is going to have to figure out how to implement a pro/rel league model subtlety over time.

MLS teams are franchises too, unlike clubs anywhere outside of America. The potential for relegation and in the process getting any chance of turning a profit pulled out from under them isn't what the owners signed up for.

Not to mention, there just isn't the kind of support for the sport here to be able to reasonably sustain that kind of system. You don't have any lower-level teams right now that could in any way keep up in MLS, and the MLS teams that were relegated would immediately lose support, profitability, etc. and would ultimately fold. It's just not sustainable here...at least yet. It would take continued growth in the popularity of the sport here, much more extreme growth, and then a complete overhaul of the entire system.
You have lower-level teams in England who do fine, with fairly large stadiums and good support. That isn't the case here at all.

I wonder if MLS pays a ransom to keep liga MX from playing more games in the USA
Even a big match between Saprissa (Costa Rica) and Olympia (Honduras) would pull more fans and TV than Kansas City Wizz and Portland ANTIFA.
Probably not all venues are the same but MLS fans are weird. In NJ, the Latin neighborhoods around the Ref bull stadium have their own teams. Games, food, beer and Smoke Shows are 199% better in the barrio.
