Losing Danberry looming huge thus far. basketball program (forced turnovers per game)

Team forced 20.3 turnovers per game last season (ranked fairly near the top nationally). This season...14.4 forced turnovers per game.

    Huge key
Level of pressure defense (including fullcourt, 3 quarters, half, traps, switching, ect.), forced turnovers, and points off of those turnovers has fallen off a good bit from last season (nationally ranked in forced turnovers and turnovers per game). Current team and personel being heavily exposed without keeping up the level of defensive pressure from the past. Big keys...lost Jordan Danberry and change of defensive approach by the new staff. Also, less dribble drive offensively from the guards.

    Few Notes
    - Last season (2019-20)...team forced 20.3 turnovers per game.
    - This season (2020-21...team forcing 14.4 turnovers per game.
    - Lost Jordan Danberry (team's leader and best defensive player, best pressure defender, ultra quck...one of the very top defensive guards in NCAA last season, and season before)
    - Lost Coach Schaefer and basically staff
    - Also lost the Splash sisters..Chloe Bibby, Andra Espinoza-Hunter (team's 2 best shooters), and Jayla Hemingway

A big key to what has been going on this season with the women's basketball program is directly associated with a combination of losing Jordan Danberry, Chloe Bibby, and Coach Schaefer..including his staff. Then bringing in Coach McCray-Penson along with basically a different staff, different system....much more went away from the level of extended ball pressure defense utilized by Coach Schaefer and his staff. Also, lost Johnnie Harris..especially working with the post players, low post offense, ect.

    Press Conference last night
Coach McCray-Penson has mentioned that she doesn't have the personel to pressure as much as she would like.. Mentioned again in post game press conference last night about not having the guards to pressure much more than they are. Also, mentioned not being a good passing team.

With or without Coach Schaefer and his staff....having Jordan Danberry availble is a huge difference maker. Remember that she was gramted an extra season of eligibility by the NCAA.. She and Bibby helped mask a lot of what you're seeing. Also, Coach Schaefer and his staff did a very good job of coaching, maximizing.

Danberry was a solid player, we can agree. But we didn't lose michael jordan. Hell, we didn't lose Darryl Wilson. We lost a solid player, not a star. YOu lose solid players every year, or should. There is Zero excuse for the horseshit program we've put on the court this year.

Big plus 1, there is a reason why some players or teams don't play hard all the time, and if it continues and the coach doesn't make some sit that creates another problem. What I've seen from WBB team this year is players not paying attention during time outs and the lack of effort on the court from both ends is bad.

Well, nice try but we have lost a lot more than Danberry in previous years and still win. Forced TO are due to D, which is due to effort of which we have little of this year. Watching the other team shoot layups from behind even in half court sets not going to do any good for you,

I remember posting in past years relating to Jordan Danberry being a one woman wrecking crew. Also, Danberry and Holmes being a 2 player wrecking crew.

Jordan Danberry- 1 woman wrecking crew defensively....brought tremendous defensive pressure. Stifling pressure and leadership.. The guards rallied around Danberry during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. Also, in the 2018 national championship game against Notredame, Danberry came into the game and helped stifle the very talented Notredame guards (including 2 WNBA 1st rounders..both #1 overall picks)...this, while Miss. State pulled out to a big lead. Again, defensive pressure rallying (national championship game) around Danberry (also..Holmes). Later, after Coach Schaefer pulled Danberry and Holmes out...Notredame eventually came all the way back, won the game during a controversial ending.

Another level type quickness and defensive pressure..Danberry brought to the table while at Miss. State. Miss. State's guards have rallied around her over the last few seasons. She was definitely the defensive catalyst. Guard rotation has yet to recover from her loss.

Not saying that Coach McCray-Penson and her coaching staff couldn't have done/couldn't do a much better job adjusting to Danberry's loss along with the loss of Coach Schaefer and basically his staff..and still have been a good bit more successful on the court than they have. Still feel that she and her staff have much work to do, more adjustments to be made/being made, ect. Thus far the team hasn't performed near as well in her system as they did under Coach Schaefer's, especially Danberry being gone as well...helping make it just that much tougher. Though recently, saw a good bit of improvement in the Arkansas loss and the Auburn win. Also. some flashes in the Alabama loss.

It's not enough. This team returned 6 of their rotation players from last season. Losing Jordan Danberry, Chloe Bibby, and Andrea Espinosa-Hunter isn't the reason this team is not good right now. Myah Taylor, Alliah Matharu, Jamyah Mingo-Young, Rickea Jackson, Jessica Carter, and Xaria Wiggins all played key roles on last year's team that won 27 games. They added Sidney Cooks to that mix, who hasn't lived up to expectations to this point but was a highly decorated recruit.

I just don't see any strengths when it comes to this head coach. The players aren't engaged into the game at all times. The effort level waxes and wanes. It's clear that the players aren't willing to give max effort for this coach. From an x's and o's standpoint, there doesn't seem to be much spacing at all on offense. I don't see a lot of on the ball or off the ball screens. It's like it is all one on one basketball. They don't work for good shots. When they do shoot, they seem to chuck it rather than shoot it.

Losing the players weren't as important as losing the mentality. When Vic first got here he recruited grinders who he could mold. In his later years we began star chasing and those types of players aren't as easy to mold as a Dillingham, Holmes, or Danberry. As much of a pain as it might be in the short term, you need to rid your roster, or purge as CML would call it, of these players. Right now I don't know that we have one player on the team who could've gotten minutes on any of Vic's teams from 2014-2017. He preached D and if you couldn't commit to it you didn't play.

Aliyah Matharu appears starting to make up a good bit more for Danberry..will need to keep it up. Myah Taylor has been stepping up. Also, the freshman Madison Hayes continuing to rebound well, bring energy. Team could possibly make a post season run with these guards continuing to progress. Definitely need Matharu taking enough field goal attempts per game...helping put team in better scoring position offensively. Need JaMya Mingo-Young back on her A game.

Team forced 19 turnovers last night (just a little off of last season's pace).
    Leading the way
    - Myah Taylor 4 steals
    - Aliyah Matharu 3 steals
