Pondering on the offense
Trying to put this game in perspective, and it's not easy. I honestly think, more than anything, we just wore out there secondary. They were gassed. But as an opposing defense, how do you honestly stop us? Pressure is the only way and a really good QB just has to get it out quick. What receivers do you focus on? You can't. Everybody is a legitimate threat. I mean name the Players with big receptions yesterday / more than who can be on the field at one time.
Short of an injury to Costello, we are the only thing that can stop our offense. There were times yesterday when we had flashes of greatness as an offense - times we looked unstoppable. We really have a high ceiling at this point.

Perfect timing with a great football mind at the helm. A seasoned qb who has incredible touch on the balls he throws. And absolutely that they were gassed, BUT that Costello SAW it and exploited it was key as well.
They played 5 in the box, we ran. They played 6 in the box we threw. It was no more complicated than that.

It's all about getting more chemistry now on offense. Like Leach said before the game when asked about his offense "It's a work in progress" which to me is putting in his whole play book. LOL, 12 plays instead of 10.
Leach showed so much calmness which players will buy into going forward.
Btw I was impressed with our FG kicker, dude looks legit. Oh, CBS and Daniels even impressed me yesterday, LOL.

A few things:
1. Leach has never had a Costello type QB. Minshew and Harold were close but not quite as physically talented. Costello has the accuracy to throw guys open and that's rare.
2. Leach said in the post game that LSU kept playing their DBs tight, so he gladly just kept throwing over the top of them. Leach's offense takes what the defense gives them and LSU was giving us deep balls. Their entire game plan was based on compete disrespect for our WRs and arrogance of their own talent.
Now, what does that mean?
Teams aren't going to make that mistake again I don't think. Against Leach, you have to rush 3 and drop 8 into Zone. Of course the problem with that is: with Costello and Hill, by only rushing 3 your opening up running lanes and giving Costello and his accuracy all day to throw. Also, how often do SEC team run defenses where they rush 3 and drop 8 into a zone? So while it may be the correct defense, they've now got perfect something in a week that they never run.
Leach has better OL, RB, and QB talent than he's ever had and that creates real issues in deciding how to defend us.

What did Washington do against leach? I have to think that film will be watched a lot prior to our upcoming games

Washington rushed 3 and dropped 8 into zone and forced short passes.
However, for many of those games there was snow on the ground, UW had Vita Vea at NG, and Leach didn't have near the OL, RB, WR, or QB talent he has here.
Washington had the blue print, but it's not as easily applicable as you may think.

Teams rush 3 and drop 8 into zone often, but as a end of game "don't blow the lead by giving up a quick score". They'd have to adjust it shorter and try to disguise the look to do it all game vs us or we'll drive in the red zone every possession.
We've shown we're going to blow up man to man and blitzes. That underneath mesh and RB swing killed LSU all night. Now we get to see how good the WRs are at feeling space vs zone.
Or hell, DCs are a stubborn lot so maybe we'll be facing man every game

Wonder how much difference stingley would've made. Gotta figure he would have locked 1 guy down... then that move each CB/safety down a guy. Not saying it would've been the difference in winning and losing, but we certainly got a little fortunate that they game planned/practiced with stingley. Of course, we gave them an absorbent amount of TOs, so it probably equals out.

I’m sure since it’s that way for every offense in history but our talent level is good enough to still score enough on bad nights.
We’ve got a 1st round QB with a good OL. That’s tuff nuts right there

Complete disrespect to our WRs... like our fans??

I'd like to see you kill a buzz... what would that be like?

And if teams drop 8, Hill and Marks will destroy them. Leach knows what he has - two weapons like he never had at Tech or Wazzu. Just wait.

That's part of the system. Belief that by the 4th quarter you will have their defense gassed
Not only did Mississippi State embarrass LSU on this night. Davis Wade Stadium wrecked Tiger Stadium in music choice, atmosphere and, most of all, volume.

2 deep safety at Washington.
Pelini had an awful game plan. You can't man up a Leach offense.

Yep everyone needs to go watch that 75 yard run by hill. Those guys were gassed at that point and that was the first play of the drive.

Let's be honest...if you were the dc of lsu wouldn't you have been the exact same way entering yesterday? All your film and game experience is our receivers couldn't catch an std in a whorehouse. Our QB's were below average at best. Who would expect anything different? You're the by God defending national champs. You got more talent sweeping the stadium out than we do on offense. Nobody had any reason to respect our throwing game. Haven't for years. Until now. We just showed the world it wasn't all on our receivers. It was coaching, scheme, and a qb that looked like he had seen a football before. Now we're the offense that can throw for 600+ a game and if you shut that down we'll just hand it off to our returning SEC rushing leader and we got you right where we want you. Adjust and try to shut that down and we'll air raid your ass until you can't breathe and we have you right where we want you. Try to hedge your bets and play a hybrid defense and you're now on your heels and we have you right where we want you.

No. a real coach should treat every opponent like they are the best team ever. Ego, and complacency will get you beat. Humility is always just 7 days away.
I don't think their coaches were arrogant about preparing for us.
Now their players?............

The better defenses in the SEC (Auburn,Alabama,Georgia,LSU, etc ) play predominantly man coverage. As a matter of fact most SEC defenses are playing man 50% of the time. We are going to terrorize the SEC. It's harder than what expected to turn a man defender into playing zone defense. Most aren't disciplined enough.
-
To add, the traditional way to stop the air raid is to drop 8 and rush 3.
However, the problem is that I'm not sure the air raid has ever had a collection of athletes like Mitchell, Shavers, Peyton, Kylie, Heath, etc running where across the board guys are capable of chunk YAK yards
LSU forced many short passes yesterday and our pass catchers ran for chunk yards. Not sure the air raid has ever had that outside of a guy here and there. Certainly not this many on one team.
