Coach Schaefer's....quick leash with his freshmen appears to be affecting confidence and development as the season moves along. 1 mistake, maybe 2 or so...normally pulls players like Matharu out of the game. This doesn't allow more for them playing through mistakes. Can also lead to players playing nervous. Rickea Jackson...allowed (that's a very good thing) to make multiple mistakes, not the others, especially Matharu. Not having time to get in good rythms, adjust to what's going on...on the floor, learn from experience and mistakes, gain confidence . These young players are starting to appear hesitant to shoot, and are tending towards being more mechanical in fear of messing up, getting pulled out fairly quick, ect....regressing from earlier in the season. Also, they were much more confident in Italy last summer....World University Games.

    Note...
Morgan William and Victoria Vivian's we're both allowed to stay in games, and play through mistakes as freshmen....really helped in there development into eventual standout players......multiple national championship appearances, ect.

Dawn Staley appears to handle the more talented 5 star type players much better at this point (including #1 class 2019). Though, Coach Schaefer does have experience with very high level young talent as an assistant at Texas A&M. Has built this program into a national power by being more of a develop the underrated players year by year coach. That and transfers have been the program's bread and butter in the past, and that's been a very good thing. As a head coach, he appears much less seasoned dealing with this level talent up grade in incoming freshmen. Will possibly need to make additional adjustments, including possibly continuing to keep up with the grad transfer portals, other type transfers, ect....if he wants to stay consistently (season to season) competitive or better than what Staley is doing at South Carolina.

Thus far grad-transfers, other type transfers have helped a lot in maintaining very high level teams. Anriel Howard was huge last season. Things could have easily been much tougher for McCowan and team last season without her. Didn't pickup up a grad-transfers this past off-season.
