Cerentola is just going to be a tight rope walker.

The good thing is that he strikes guys out so he can work out of jams. With a sinker baller or more contact oriented pitcher, they have much more trouble overcoming walks.

He also allowed 3 runs- 2 unearned. However his third inning when he gave up the two unearned he started it off with two walks and then we made an error and then we scored on a fielder's choice later on in the inning.

Honestly- this is probably going to be a typical Sunday for him.

Hopefully like last year he will improve enough by the end of the year where he can be really effective for at least 5-6 innings. He's very talented but he's still learning.

I thought I heard somewhere that he was being eased back into action because his stint with Team Canada was a little longer than everyone else's summer ball session - or something to that effect. I'm not familiar with how the off-season schedules work though.

That's true about him being eased back at least. I think we're easing all of our starting pitchers back in honestly. We're very talented in the rotation but there is also a lot of development still going on. Cerentola needs to develop his command and be more efficient over longer outings basically. Opening weekend I wouldn't be surprised if their pitch counts are like 80 or less honestly. We're going to have to use our bullpen a lot early. It's probably going to cost us some OOC games here and there. The good news is we have a couple of guys like Carlisle Koestler, Jack Eagan, Jared Shemper, Chase Patrick, and Landon Sims that have had some mostly good moments. But we aren't going to burn them up against Wright State and we're going to have to see what we have with our other pitchers too. And our offense should be able to put some runs on the board so we'll be OK in the long run.

I could see Cerantola having the Stratton and Hudson trajectory. We will probably see flashes this year, but next year may be when he becomes the first rounder we think he can be.

When the season ended last year, I thought he would be in a closer role this year. Either way it goes, he has to throw strikes.

For the record, I thought his results were much better coming out of the bullpen last year as opposed to the game or two he started. That said, he had very few opportunities.

That first inning against Memphis last year was something else.

I agree. And the main reason I agree is because he is making progress. Long way to go still but he has also come a long way too.

That was injury, but...

Jacob Lindgren, Zac Houston, Dakota Hudson, Ethan Small, and Girodo all made huge leaps in performance after 1 or 2 years. Though, I would not rank Cerantola’s present state as high as many of these guys at the same time - Ethan was actually a sophomore TJ.

The deal is - if a guy with Cerantola gifts were already polished, he would not be in Maroon today, he would be a pro already. We just got to invest the innings in his development. This is normal. If Cerantola is not an All American this year, no worries, we need a Friday night for next year.
