Per history, Mullen is exactly what MSU needs......

Take a look at our most successful teams (regular season) in our modern history:

    1974: 8-3
    1976: 9-2
    1980: 8-3
    1994: 8-3
    1998: 8-3
    1999: 9-2
    2010: 8-4

What did all those have in common?

    - Unique offensive philosophy
    - Dominating defenses
    - Talent

IN GENERAL, you have to think that this is what we have to shoot for. Those teams all had an offensive coach in charge (Jackie is debatable, but he definitely had a strategy) and a good defensive coordinator. Look further, and when those coaches had losing records, it was either a bad defensive hire or some recruiting ****-ups. Recruiting is effort, always will be, so have to consider that a constant.

So we know what we have to do to maximize what MSU does on the football field. Now, how do we sustain it? Well, seems to me that we obviously have to just not ****-up on the recruiting trail, and the coach has to be a good manager. Tyler and Sherrill were definitely that. I don't know that Bellard was, and the jury is still out on Mullen.

Given that, how do we take the next step? To me, you look at our years when we were the best (1999 and 2010) and ask, "What was missing?". I think that answer is fairly obvious. A stud superstar somewhere. The Heisman type. Think Cam Newton.

That's a lot of things that have to line up. But at least we have the offensive coach and the solid recruiting right now. Seem to have a good DC. Maybe next year is the next 8 to 9 win season. Will Prescott be the stud QB we've always needed?

It takes schools like MSU four to five years to build. I am good right now with Mullen but next year he has to produce a good season and if not then I will be on the fire Mullen band wagon. Theres a lot of venting going on here on this board and it's all for not. Mullen is here next season regardless.

Well I meant to keep it somewhat modern, at least in the post-integration era.

I was about to say too bad I didn't live in that generation. Knowing my luck, I would have been captured by the Germans during WW2 and would have missed those good years.

I think this is an excellent post because the only people that think Mullen is on the hot seat are a portion of the MSU fanbase. No one else, not the media, not the administration, not fans of other teams, think Mullen is in serious jeopardy of losing the head coaching job at Mississippi State University. You've got to go back to 1955 to find a coach with a better winning % than Mullen, and he only coached 20 games.
