Butch has seen this kid from a few years ago. Remember, he had a submarine pitching camp, first college to do that. Why not pros convert them all the time. Anyway, Elliot comes sidearm w movement, strikes out hitters or gets them out other ways. But he throws upper 80's sidearm. Just another pitcher to come at hitters differently and gets them out.

Some players have to convert to keep playing, he is one. I'm excited about his potential. Fall ball our spring training with tell the tale.

I think Elliott is more of a sidearmer than a submarine guy. Think Chad Girodo type motion. Or maybe somewhere in between Girdo and Myles Gentry.

The guy throws 88 from wherever he throws it. Plus, he will only be a sophomore next year, so we will have him for three years.

I think Butch is going to load up on these submarine/sidearm guys. Which I like. There are a lot of guys that want to play for MSU that may not have SEC ability by throwing over the top, but if they can learn a different arm angle they can be on the team and contribute in a big way. In theory, they should be easier to recruit and cost less scholarship money. Lots of positives. The big negative is that LH hitters tend to hit them well unless it is a LH guy. They can learn "tricks" to help them out with that though.

I like mixing those guys in with the power arm guys like Hudson, Sexton, Tatum, and Houston.

Why is it so rare to see a left handed submarine guy? Just curious. Too much movement into Right handers? Too easy when a majority of hitters are righties? I had never thought about it til this thread came up

I think there was a myth that they couldn't do it. It might be because of the fact that there are so many RH hitters vs. LH hitters. There are a few out there. Like Randy Choate and Mike Myers. LH pitchers get a lot of deception just by being LH to start with.

One of the traditional baseball things is that side arm guys are typically right handed guys that cannot throw with great velocity or movement, so they drop their arm angle to generate movement and also take advantage of the lack of velocity. With lefties, in the past you didn't have very many lefties that could throw 90+, so they weren't dropped down.

A submarine guy is easy to pick up from the opposite batters box...left handed hitters see right handed submariners well and vica versa. Also, the natural loop or late movement would dive rite into the swing plane of those opposite handed hitters (Think van Johnson vs Wilkerson in 98, remember the ball barely foul that woulda been a game winning grand slam?).

The low angle lefties you do see are usually left on left specialist. There is a HUGE difference between a girodo arm slot and a mike Myers arm slot. Which is why girodo can get both sides out and Myers is a specialist.

Anyone heard anything on Luke Reynolds from hinds? I know he visited campus the other day.

There were some rumors on here that we were looking at some players from Hinds, and analytically speaking, he was their best player last year. He was their team MVP and hit .376 with 5 home runs 14 doubles, 14 stolen bases and an OBP of .475. He plays third base and is a left handed hitter and he would have three years left to play. So, he would be a good fit for us based on our team needs.

Wow, that's great, especially for a guy like Riley who isn't a senior.

Vallot got HS POY, btw. Doesn't really matter to us now, but it can't hurt to have 'Mississippi State signee' listed when you announce the high school player of the year.

Oh, yes. He flew to KC the other day. He won't turn down 1.4 or whatever it is. His mother has/had cancer so of course that money really helps. Only chance we got is if he would have dropped to later rounds.
