The highest level of CFB should condense down to 60ish teams and that's probably where we're headed. The G5 or whatever their name is now should start their own playoff and crown a natty. The first game of the following season should be between the P4 champ and G5 champ.

9 SEC games only makes it worse on us- especially if in addition they add a B10 game to the OOC. That will just require a team to have even more depth
Bama, Mississippi, and SC all won 9 games this season and missed the playoff. Our program is now a yearly fight to get to 7 wins. I get wanting to be optimistic and all- but reality should be setting in.
We are financially almost the exact same as Ole Miss. They didn't not go to the playoff this year because of money. They didn't go because their coach shit the bed. This is the only era in the history of CFB that we have ever had a chance to go to the playoffs and we will 100% get there with the right coach in place. We will never do it consistently, but the current era of parity could literally not be better for a school like us. We suck currently because of awful administrative decisions and the unfortunate event of our head coach dying. A good coach can have us right in the mix. Kids are not sitting on the bench at Alabama and Georgia any more. The playing field has never been more level. We just had a top ten portal class. If we suck under Lebby it's because Lebby sucks. Not because we aren't financially stepping up to be competitive.

They are way ahead of the curve and their timing was perfect. They have a bigger brand than us and Oxford has a great reputation. Our coach died and Starkville sucks. NIL came at the worst time for us. They have definitely pulled way ahead of us the last 2-3 years. Hate to say it.
Like 34 said, I want badly to have optimism but I am a realist. Have pretty much already checked out on football. Watched like a quarter of 4 games this year which is insane to think about.

If the home fields are used for playoff games and not neutral sites, then MSU has NO CHANCE WHATSOEVER in advancing beyond the first round. It will always be a one and done. Buit if just making the playoffs floats our boat, then we should be in eternal bliss.

In my experience of following MSU football the best way to get MSU to do something major to improve is for Ole Miss to be good at football.

Half the people outside Mississippi didn't know the difference between State and Ole Miss 5 years ago. Their brand is bigger right now because they raised money and hired a competent football coach. We have raised the money and are in wait and see mode on if we have a competent football coach. If we do we will have the same exact success that they do. If we don't we will continue to suck. They don't have anything at all that we can't have. Vandy won 7 games this year as well. This is the best era in college football for mid tier teams to win something besides a mediocre bowl game. You simply have to be aligned from the top down.

Vandy completely changed their program and went Triple Option like We went Air Bone with Leach. Its a one trick pony that is a short term answer.
We dont have top 12 money plus a town few recruits are drawn to. Vandy has Nashville at least as a draw to recruits. So we have to figure out how to compete with a lower level recruiting town in Mississippi while having a bottom 25% budget/NIL in the SEC
Good-****ing-luck

Not happening. Our days are dwindling.

Good grief you guys act like we're Jacksonville State. We've consistently ranked (recruiting) in the top 25-30 for 20 years now. We just came out of the golden era of State football. We have future NFL hall of famers playing in the NFL right now. Starkville is not Las Vegas but we know a ton of people up here (Memphis) that sent their kids to State (or do now) and they rave about how much they love Starkville. These are people that have no historical ties to State whatsovever, many of whom relocated to Memphis at some point for work. My son's girlfriend went with us to ONE game this past fall and she made her decision to go to State that weekend. She had never been to State in her life!
Bottom line, we just need the right coaching staff and we will be fine. Fine as in back to 7/8 wins, maybe 9 when stars align. It's all about coaching, period.

This!!
I'm not expecting us to be the next Alabama dynasty, but it's not inconceivable that once every few years the right coach can put a team together that has the chance to be ranked high enough to sneak into the playoffs.

We have enough money to get a top 10 transfer portal class after going 2-10. We suck because of bad hires. We can make the playoffs just as easily as the rest of these mid level teams that were right in the thick of it all year. Our sh*tty little town has no problem recruiting every other sport on campus. That's just an excuse poor ole's use to justify us not committing financially to the only sport that pays the bills.

The mid-levels didnt make the playoff tho- thats the point.
As long as there is Bama, Texas, Tenn, Fla, Georgia, LSU, and probably Oklahoma most seasons- the rest of us are SOL. Mississippi just maxed themselves out on potential and couldnt make it. Neither will we

I heard that one of the higher ups at ESPN is a big Ole Miss alum. Not sure if it is true but definitely makes sense the way that ESPN slobs their knob.
