Billy Donovan would be an interesting (out of the box) selection. I think he would do very well there.

A lot of these coaches have huge buyout clauses. This isn't going to be as easy for Kentucky as people think it is.
There's someone in my head but its not me.

UK wanted to fire Cal but was on the hook for his full contract.

In their mind, it is a UK basketball birthright to be a basketball powerhouse with regular trips to the final 4, and they knew Cal was not getting back there but were stuck with him, and they were eventually going to have to bite the bullet on a buyout exceeding $20M and buyout on their next coach. And now instead they are golden - they get to look now and saved the buyout to fire him.

They just got a’get out of jail free’ card and have money burning a hole in their pocket. Nothing is off the table in terms of either coaching buyout, coach salary, or NIL assurances to secure a top coach.

Yep, the actual number was above $32 Mil and apparently they were getting it together.

I hope Calipari negotiated a buyout in exchange for pursuing the Arkansas job. Surely he could have gotten them to commit to a $5M buyout if he took a job at Arkansas that he can keep regardless of what the Arkansas contract pays.

UK basketball is like Bama football as far as being hurt by NIL. They were competing with a handful of programs that paid top dollar for talent. Now lots of schools that don't care as much about basketball but have more money are going to be making offers that are competitive with or better than UK's.

Still a very good job, but the expectations are going to be extremely difficult to meet.
