The review and call was the correct call on the OM lateral. But what?s the rule on the inadvertent whistle and reviewing the play. Did we get the ball because it was a clear recovery by us(thank you Jett) and the whistle didn?t matter. Or because of the whistle, should have it even been reviewed because it was blown dead? Just wondering if we caught a break or was the rule followed correctly. Either way it was a lateral recovered by Jett and OM can?t argue that.
At 1st the refs ref said IW and replay the down which was a WTF call. Then it was a review after the refs got confused on which down it was then Leach got into their faces about the Lateral and Johnson got possession of the ball before the whistle/ Thank heaven for confusion.
The whistle was inadvertent because it was a backwards pass and still a live ball. So the play became dead at that point the whistle was blown. As for the replaying the down part that was a mess, but the booth got it right.Quote:

No, but the booth initiated the review, the linesman who?s responsible for determining it a pass is forward or not immediately punched his hand backwards so there was something to look at. It was the pass.
A ball ruled a fumble that remains in bounds cannot just simply be awarded to a team that does not have possession of it. It's hard to wrap ones mind around it but the easiest way to say it is that the play is dead, but the ball is not dead. It will be given to whoever just absent mindedly picks it up lol.

Here's the thing, ole miss is arguing on a technicality that it can't go against them. The bottom line is the end result was correct in terms of they made a bad play and were correctly punished for it. In the end it didn't make a difference.

He said, to paraphrase, that since the original ruling on the field was a lateral, it is within the rules to review a play that involves an inadvertent whistle. Since there was a clear recovery “in the immediate, continuing action” of the play the ball could be awarded to us. Nice!!!!!
The whole thing is of no consequence to the final outcome of the game. As a result of it, we fumbled, they scored and didn't get the two (after taking two time outs, which hurt them immensely). Even if it would've cost them the game it would be payback for the b.s. call by DICK Pace in the '81 Egg Bowl.Quote:
