Yep. Sad times.
That's just it. College athletics has always been about academics and giving athletes an opportunity to be educated. Lemonis said Tuesday they left after lunch because..... players had classes.
However the problem isn't the ncaa. It is the rule breakers. The people that want to cheat and lie to get a questionable athlete on campus regardless if he/she earned the opportunity in the classroom. Lie and cheat to win a ball game. Then the ncaa enforces rules. People get upset and say it isnt fair. So we dropped standards and prop 48 and on and on. An inch became another Inch, then a mile, then 100 miles. Now folks want to blame the ncaa when rules are broken and enforced. Par for our society now a days. No rules. Just do whatever. Well, the ncaa is now saying do whatever. People are getting exactly what they asked for. No rules. Free for all. Well, go for it and enjoy.
I've heard this story for years and tried to apply it in all that I do. It especially applies to the world we live in today.

What could save college football is for college to enforce academic standards and for the usfl to sign high school kids. All it takes is one freak of nature that the usfl wants to take a chance on... then snow ball from there.
The usfl becomes the NFL quasi minor league rather than college.
Remember when old dudes were saying everything is going to hell and they just sounded like old grumpy dudes....
The root cause of academic issues lies with our piss poor public schools and shitty parenting.
This could lead to new divisions based on a school's wealth for crying out loud. The best thing about Professional sports are Salary Caps and other parity creating rules that give the less rich a chance to win championships and the wealthy to falter if Dumbasses are running their uber rich show (See Jeruh). These rules were placed to bring back lost fans and it worked.
We are in the infancy part of all this new shit just like professional sports were and I'm shocked college "leadership" doesn't believe the same thing will happen to college sports as it did to professional. Right now it's like a Coup where the wealthy have taken control but hopefully cooler heads eventually prevail to save college sports once the negative impacts of this bullshit is realized. Socialism is good for sports. Did I just say that?
