And it may ultimately cost loafers his job. But he may be onto something with his GM to AD model. (More of an NFL model). This could lessen the importance of the head coach and give athletic departments at least a little leverage over Jimmy Sexton. Be interesting to follow the next 5 years.
What exactly did Scott do or not do?
I saw a report that Alford at FSU was reaching out to Kiffin behind the scenes but bowed out because FSU "couldn't afford Lane".
I think that is a really valid strategy.
GM reporting to AD, Coach is there to coach. More of a plug and play with the coach. The
Interesting approach. They hired a former NFL GM for the job as well.
Kiffin wanted to be in control of all the roster, nil decisions and bring in his guy from Ole Miss. Scott said he was going to be hiring the GM which he ultimately brought in an ex-NFL GM. Kiffin didn?t like this at all. Killed the deal in the first meeting. LSU told Kiffin he would have total control.Quote:

In general, yes. Very few head coaches are equipped to handle all the different aspects required to run a multi-million dollar business. But in this particular case, I think he should have given Kiffin complete autonomy. For one, Kiffin has proven he knows what hes doing as far as roster construction in this NIL era. And two, Stricklins ass is gone if Sumrall doesnt pan out.Quote:

Leach won 7 and 8 games in his 2nd and 3rd year. His model was starting to work before his passing

Well Dowdell had a chance to come back to MSU and he then he went to Oregon or Nebraska instead so I don't feel bad at all about the Dowdell situation. If we had a legit NIL structure in place when Leach passed away it would have saved us at least a year or two of rebuilding.
And I think this goes along with this topic to a degree at least. MSU has always expected the football coach to basically do what Ron Polk did in baseball and tell the administration what we needed to do. But the administration shouldn't rely solely on the coach to tell MSU what to do and what is needed. Dan was probably the closest to Polk in that regard and Dan did do a lot for our program to modernize it but he also lacked some areas to like recruiting.
And it's not like Arnett couldn't have adapted the offense to the players. Croom got railed for that for years and rightfully so. But it's Leach's staff's fault for not recruiting for the next staff?
When Arnett was our coach the recruiting was absolutely atrocious. Lebby basically salvaged that class at the end.
