Debate: Egg Bowl rivalry Pre-NIL/Portal vs Present NIL/Portal

Figured I would get a little debate going before the Egg Bowl.

We all know how much the Egg Bowl meant Pre-NIL. For the most part, both teams had majority Mississippi kids who grew up loving one team and hating the other. All you have to do is watch old highlights and you will quickly see the dislike from both State and Ole Miss.

Here's the debate:

With the transfer portal and NIL draped through college football now and rosters full of kids from all over the country (Especially OM).. do you think the rivalry still means as much to the players as it use to?

To the fans, I say absolutely. To the Mississippi kids, yes. But I feel like the fire has somewhat died out due to so many different players transferring every year from all over the country. Would like to hear y'alls view.

It ain't the same/ Heck it started before NIL. Kiffen and Leach were very close and there was never any animosity between them so no hatred filtered down like between Moorhead and Fatass.

I want the hatred back. I wish Lebby would poke OM like Mullen use to. We really need something to light a fire under their a$$ before Friday

Yes we have. We've gotta change the narrative somehow. If we lose on the scoreboard then we need to just have an all out brawl. And then have the university promote the hell out of it all over social media. I'm tired of us always "taking the high road." We gotta keep raising money and maybe just as important.. become the cool school. That school up north knows how to promote.. and I hate them even more for being good at it.

I think in the long run it will be the best thing to happen to us. I would say NIL accelerated our current rebuild by at least two years.

The trick is MSU fan have to be OK with it and believe that it will work after years of being discouraged to pay players under the old structure.

Im hoping OM's bubble pops. Hopefully they went all in to fast and it will eventually come to a head.

Hopefully for us, it's a slow and steady wins the race type build.

I think it's a situation where Ole Miss was closer to whatever their ceiling is from the start and because of that there is only so much further they can go. On the other hand we were so far behind I believe we are just starting to scratch the surface.

Like I said, I think the problem we have is buy in for various reasons. Our fans at first didn't want to pay players, it was promoted at all by Cohen unless you wanted a signed baseball for 800 dollars, and I think a lot of the locals like the idea of someone coming to MSU and spending five years there and watching their full development from freshman to hopefully Dak Prescott.

Ole Miss has always had a do whatever it takes to win mentality and actually glorified cheating. I remember being about I guess 6 years old in church- this was one of the largest in Jackson- and after the service I remember hearing a gentleman bragging about how he "got a player to Ole Miss" and I wasn't sure what he was talking about. So I asked my Dad and my Dad said he was full of hot air and that he was talking about giving a player money to go to Ole Miss. Now, my Dad was probably right about the guy being full of hot air but at the same time it's an example of how their culture is because this was the 80's I'm sure when that incident happened.

And like I said too- the odds of them finding another coach that can consistently win 10 games every year is very low. That's low for anyone much less a non-blueblood. Lot of things have to come together for that to happen- good coach, stability, and a good schedule.

But the thing I think Ole Miss is going to miss the most with Kiffin is his ability to evaluate the portal. That's the other part to it. You have to have money to get the players but you also have to have a coach and a staff that can evaluate who to get out of the portal.

When they had dirty low down coaches (brewer and freeze) tossing cash, they fielded good teams. The ncaa stopped them. There is no ncaa today.

This rivalry is more like Bedlam now.

As for the players. We will see this weekend. Their players will be checked out if Kiffin is gone.

In his presser Monday, Lebby looked scared. I'm not sure how much effort we play with either.

However with them bringing so many fans, the animosity in the stands will be much greater than that on the field.

I have to disagree here. They got very smartly got ahead of the NIL situation. They established the framework for gathering the funding necessary before most schools even thought about it and it has payed off for them. This network is not going to fade away because of a coaching change. I think that it's a reason they will be able to attract a quality replacement, everything is already in place for the new guy to succeed.

I don’t care anything close to what I used to about college football in general since nil/portal. Therefore I don’t care much about the Egg either. Not planning to watch.

Lebby knows how important this one is. But you're not going to poke them when we've beaten them once in 5 years. Even Mullen didn't start really poking them until we won. But if we win......he'll throw a jab. I kind of know the jab he's going to throw if we win.

In all fairness your second paragraph is what college football is supposed to be, that is the purity of the sport and the pageantry that made it leagues above everything else. The true NIL wouldn't have killed it, but paying for play is killing it. There is no true pageantry anymore outside of the fan, and even that is waning. We can sit here and scream of buy into the new way, but we have to understand the beauty of college ball would be absolutely dead if something doesn't change. I think that's what bothers most state fans that still haven't bought in.

I agree with you. They got way ahead if the gane while everyone else was in wait and see mode. I just hope somewhere along the line (hopefully soon) they somehow make a critical mistake. It's just the animosity in me. But dang I also have to give them credit. They seen the writing on the wall and jumped before anyone else.

The bad part (in my mind), is even if they lose Kiffin and the game to us... how much of a swing in recruiting momentum actually happens? They will still have all the money and their boosters will probably raise a few million more just out of spite towards us.

They will. They will fire a quality replacement if he does not win as much as lane. Lane struggled even with that soft a$$ schedule the last two years. Next guy will lose some of those and they will fire a guy for 7-5 or too many 8-4 with a bowl loss. Then Lane will have a title in 3 years and nobody will remember OM

Peter Burns and Chris Doering did an interview with Mullen today (Idk why) but they asked him what was his favorite Egg Bowl moment. He told the 2013 story of course with Dak's mom passing, Dak being hurt, and how it was a miracle Dak was able to come in and play to help lead the comeback. Dan was in tears telling the story. It's on Twitter if anyone wants to watch it.

But I'm saying this cause I dont remember what thread it was on but it was conversations about how Dan doesn't like Starkviile and will never come back. It's obvious after watching that interview.. Starkville and State means something to him. I'm sure as he has gotten older he realized what he had here. And this is not me pushing for Mullen to come back. Just a cool story and it involves the Egg Bowl.
