Now who do they hire?? Is Petrino the interim?
Petrino is the interim. Very good chance he becomes permanent but not a done deal yet either.
Rhett Lashlee will be a candidate as well.
This is the first coach to be fired in the SEC in over a season and a half! Crazy!
I think we will see a ton of movement this off-season/season honestly.
Yes, buyouts are ridiculous and huge but at some point it becomes cost prohibitive to a program.
Yep I woulda won that prop bet.
Gus Mahlzahn will be a candidate as well.
Beating them just got a bit more difficult
Petrino isn't going to prevent us or anyone from scoring 40+ on them.
Kelly next to go.
I've been told that there are things in Petrino's agreement with UPig that he can be an assistant (or interim) but can't be The head coach again due to past issues.
Note: 2nd hand info from a former player under petrino that is an acquaintance with one of my kids. The dude said he would undergo shock therapy if it would erase his memory of playing for petrino. Hated him and hated playing for him. I wasn't given context on why he hated BP- just that he did.
is he making changes on defense? If not then it won't matter
This doesn?t surprise me. He?s mellowed out some now, but he was a military-grade asshole who had unrealistic expectations and demanded perfection down to running your route nearly to the millimeter as a receiver. Players hated him but respected him for making them better.
So far Petrino along with Sumrall and Lashlee have been the three names tossed around, but it seems like it rarely goes to the early targets.
Most would prefer a younger innovative coach this time around. Gus is still a pretty divisive figure with average Hog fans, but Lashlee is from his coaching tree and could also potentially unlock a lot of the same $$$ from the big money boosters. His wife has some family pretty high up the chain in the Walmart c-suite.

Any thoughts?
I think Lashlee is the target and it will get interesting. SMU has as much money as they need- so it wont be money. But prestige matters so that helps UPig.
Mullen is surely an option based on his history. He becomes even more attractive as a guy that has shown he can squeeze talent out of a dollar.
Petrino has a shot- but it would take old school money to come in to support him moving forward
Petrino is either at an advantage or disadvantage depending on the rest of the season plays out. I think he is at a disadvantage because their defense is bad. But if he wins games, that could be enough to promote him. If he loses and they keep looking bad- and let's be honest his unit cost them the Ole Miss and Memphis game by fumbling in the fourth quarter- I think it hurts him.
With NIL now it?s almost worth it to just hire whomever your big money donors want regardless of where they rank on the pecking order so you have an unlimited funding source. The AD doesn?t hire Calipari without John Tyson being good friends with him. I?m not sure Lashlee is a better coach than Sumrall TBH but the potential connections he has with the big money folks probably trumps that.
Listened to SMU and Arkansas podcasts last night. Both say Lashlee is the top target and probably will be the next head coach at Arkansas.
