Guarding the 3 pt line

Looking back at tonight, Alabama makes 15 threes. If you take away their 15 threes and give them twos, we win 84-73. Now obviously you are not going to stop them from making EVERY 3, but hell cut it down by 7 tonight and give them easy drives. That makes it 84-81. You win.

With Kentucky, cut it by 8 and the score is 90-87. You win.

Point being, hell give up the two points. Let him 360 windmill it for all I care. Just run them off the 3 pt line. If they hit 5-7 then oh well. At least they are not hitting 13-16, which is what is currently getting us beat.

Good point, seems logical.

Hubbard’s defense is weak. Some is because his size but some is because he doesn’t hustle every defensive possession. He seems to be one or two steps late guarding his man.

I think Jans? defense has somewhat been figured out a little. We double the post out people have figured out how to swing out of it and move the ball fast for an open three. We have to adjust.

MSU will not be able to compete with teams shooting almost 50% from 3.
Something has to be done.

It's been bad all year. Cam just sitting there and letting the white boy shoot the one in the corner was mind numbing. Bad coaching.

Yea that was inexcusable. I understand the kid has not shot it great this year from 3, especially in the last 3 games and was 0-4 up to that point on the night, but you still cannot leave the guy wide ass open. He can hit a 3.

I posted last week we don't shoot good from 3 and we can't defend the 3 at all. Clearly it's our biggest roadblock to really doing anything at all in the NCAA tournament.

Jans wanted the white boy to shoot 3s. problem is he made it. dude bricked free throws but hit clutch 3

This, 100% and missing a lot of free throws. Jans is becoming our Dan Mullen of basketball. Beats the teams we are supposed to beat, but can't get over the "Hump" and beat the Big Boys.

And how many free throws did we miss? This and the inability to guard the three has cost us more than the bama game. See KY. A friend of mine pointed out after last night's loss (we were both there), that we will never beat bama (or any other top team in my opinion), giving up about 90 points.

We are weak stopping the drive which causes rotation and the open 3. Josh in particular. Harris is solid.

Last night we quit rebounding. that cost us the game.

Cam not dunking the runaway (something he has done his whole career) why the soft approach? Cam has a mental thing going on now, you can see it. He is scared to make a play after 8 TO at USC. He hasn't played well in at least 2 weeks.

Murph played great but he normally dunks that lay in at the end.

No box out on FT? I predicted that one from my living room.

Kugel was even scared handling the ball last night for some reason?

Josh got his game back by driving when it was open, dishing and being selective on his 3s. He took a few bad ones but was mostly back to form.

We have opponents that are shooting 3s against us at OUR gym almost as good as we shoot free throws. That won't win many games. The KY and AL games were almost replays of each other. Against KY we gave up 16 threes but late Hubbard had the chance to give us the lead but missed. Against Bama we gave up 15 threes but AGAIN late Murphy had the point blank shot to give us the lead but missed. We have got to force teams off the 3 pont line to win any of these games against the elite SEC teams. Our perimeter defense is just an anchor tied to our neck for now.

While I agree, you said we still had a shot to win both games but missed. Maybe the problem is more we aren't hitting baskets like our opponents in do-or-die time.

Yes, but those games where we are giving up a boatload of 3s we are always playing from behind and fighting an uphill battle.

i understand your point, but it doesn't necessarily work like that. They did make 15 three pointers. But they took 31 shots. So they scored 45 points on 31 attempts. If you give them "easy drives" (your words), they might increase their percentage. Maybe they make 23 layups on 31 attempts. That would be 46 points on 31 attempts and we lose the game by even more.

math is hard for some. thx for the input.

Not going to happen. Guarding the 3 point line is not in the State DNA. Doesn't matter the Coach or the names on the jerseys historically.

Our shooters have to get better so we can make 3's and FT's. Then and only then, will State best the top teams in the SEC. We had 1 guy score in the 30's. That doesn't happen for the top teams. They have much better balance. We have guys that score 19 one game and 6 the very next time out.

Jans Year 1- 36th in 3 pt defense

Jans Year 2- 8th in 3 pt defense

Jans Year 3- 258th in 3 pt defense


So this definitely goes in direct contrast to your statement that guarding the 3 pt line is not in Mississippi St DNA. We literally were top 10 last year. We just sacrificed defense for offense when we traded Harris for Moore/Davis, Melendez for Jeffries, and Nwoko/Cam for Tolu. Add in to that we traded Kugel for Moore.

Isn't DNA a little older than Jans? I'm sure there are a plethora of coaches who have worn maroon skin jackets who couldn't get their charges to stay in front of the 3 point shooters. So are the past 2 years outliers? You said Jan's traded defense to get offense. From 8th to 258th is a hell of a bad trade.
