Mississippi State Football

We pay half what the teams in this conference pay for good coaches so we can continue to hire all these first time sorry ass coaches. We get big donations for NIL and can't get players to even take the over payment because of these Great Value coaching staffs. The only damn fools that can't see we continue through this cycle every time are the ones running the show and making the hires. They poor ole Stated this football program to hell and flipped the boosters and fans/supporters the finger. When do we force these SOBs out? We need people here that care and want to get things done and encourage us all to be involved instead of this standoffish BS while they build their retirement. We were willing to pay Dan Mullen his asking price but since then it's been cheap assed losers and penny pinching.

Meh- we made a bad hire to replace Mullen. Then Leach died so we put a bandaid on it because of it being late after signing day. We are here now with a top coordinator that our AD chose over others.

It's not that we are cheap or whatever. Our school is not going to attract a known guy in his prime. We have to go young or near retirement vet. That's just reality. I'm old enough to remember Sunbelt Billy turning us down. Others did as well. Until people realize coaches would rather have the UCF job amongst others than ours- they will remain disappointed. Hopefully Lebby can sell his vision to better recruits and free agents so we get better.

I would think that those accepting the program is the bottom of the barrel and poor ol State have the small frame of reference and a limited understanding of what State football can be. Truth is we are plopped in the middle of fertile football recruit territory. We can somehow have a highly respected baseball program that routinely signs top 10 classes and has won NC and SEC champs, a above average basket ball program with success throughout it’s history but it JUST CANT be done with football because poor OL State. Nope. That’s some small brain, limited thinking. The truth is that if the administration was cleaned out (really cleaned out) of the dead weight and we focused our funds and really greenlit a long term marketing and recruiting strategy out football program could replicate the success our baseball program has had.

Yep, this all day. Look at our history and best two coaches. Jackie was rebounding from NCAA stuff but a great proven coach. Mullen was an up and comer. That is our two choices of type of coaches we can get at our best. Jackie was greatful for the 2nd chance and is all Dawg and wanted to stay here. Mullen got the big head and thought he was better but he learned otherwise. Maybe Lebby is the up and comer next coach; we'll see soon.

Heck I'd be in favor of bringing JWS back now over this staff. What is he like 80 now?

I think some recently said it was rumors and not correct but I do remember hearing years back that Whittingham was interested. I don't see why we couldn't attract someone like a Petrino, Malzahn or whatever that guys name is at Minnesota that came from the FCS ranks. We don't have to look D1 for our next coach but we always seem to do that and settle on someone without HC experience.

Did people really think a 2-10 program was going to sign an elite class, even a top 20 class? That we would be the first program in history to go 2-10 and kill it on signing high school players the following week?

This will be a grind and a process. Win 5 next year. Then you have something to sell. Getting a top 10 qb this year was a massive win.

Whittingham had a little interest when Mullen was working to leave. He was in his late 50's then and was thinking of doing what Leach did- see if he can win in the SEC before he retires. Malzahn turned UPig down to stay at UCF. He damn sure wasnt considering us. He's not leaving the state of Fla it appears. He and that level 5 crazy he is married to love it there.

Fleck is not leaving Minnesota to coach at State. He is looking for a bigger job

That is the point of all this. We have to hire a guy like Fleck before he blows up and hope it works out. We wont get that guy after. We have instead gone the coordinator route because it worked with Mullen. JoVester was a bust and Lebby has at least 2 more years to show it was the correct call.

Meh to your Meh. We could definitely invest more in the assistants both on and off the field. We are saving money by not having an OC as well. I'm good with the Lebby hire, I'm not good with 80% of the staff.

It didn't take Mullen 3 years of mediocrity to turn it around. And don't try to sell me that Croom left Mullen a nice foundation to build on. No way that Clown Show I witnessed in Oxford on Thanksgiving weekend in 2008 was a building block. That team was horrible and weakly put together, and had 3 or 4 players just like the team that returned this year.

That first class that Mullen brought in was teed up by Croom and it was elite. Bumphis, Nickoe, Banks, Slay, Gabe Jackson, Fletcher Cox, Josh Boyd, Pernell McPhee and other contributors. Not even comparable to what Zach Arnett left for Lebby.

Lebby is a dead man walking. He's got no vision if he kept his staff that's awful. The man has no clue how to run a program. And Whittington had zero interest here. He was playing for a raise and he got it and more. The man got a lifetime job out it.

I will continue to beat the drum that we need a legit football GM that is elite at roster management and staff management. That way, we never have to rely on a head coach to be a jack of all trades. Very few can.

That is untrue. A friend of mine is a good friend of his and they talked about it multiple times during the process. This friend got Bumphis the job at Utah. He knows of what he speaks

We are the new Vanderbilt - minus the academics and happening place to visit. We bring nothing to the SEC. Our best bet is to Tulane our way out of here and compete for Conference USA titles.

Right now, I don't think CUSA, Sunbelt, or American would take State. What do we have to offer them? The 350th TV market? A World Renowned Disc Golf Team? The biggest Stadium in the conference for Football and Baseball?

We could do something catchy - maroon turf or something extreme. Who am I kidding... We can't even get LEDs in our stadium.

All this NIL stuff is making lots of people lose interest in college football, including myself. Not like the old days when you were raised up with loyalty to a particular school.

Yall act like Oxford and auburn are great places. They have built it up because of football but aren't anything special, especially Oxford. Yet they get recruits and compete. It's just like dawgology stated, you can't say how well we do with recruiting in basketball and baseball and say no one wants to come here with football. Just pay to get good coaches and staff and people will want to come. You just have to pay them, sometimes more.
Like many have said, it's hard to bring guys to a team that won 2 games and lost badly at home to Toledo and kept the same staff.

Money is obviously the deciding factor in a business or a University. But from an entertainment perspective wouldn't you rather enjoy wins than leaving games in the third quarter? I'm not advocating leaving the SEC and it won't happen unless we get kicked out someday. But I'm guessing Arizona St is having a whole lot more fun than we are right now.
