Please keep NIL the way it is

I've got a son that turns 13 at the end of July.

He was the only 7th grader to start for the 8th grade team last Fall. He played LT and has great feet. He is also the typical Coach's son that you tell him something once and he has got it. He has been working out 3 times per week this summer with my HS guys in the weightroom, pulling weighted sleds, doing flexibility and change of direction drills. He's 6'1/170 and they plan to play him at LB on D so he can defend sideline to sideline for them defensively. His Dr says according to his growth chart he will likely be 6'3/6'4. He's going to be a DE/LT in HS. I've been approached by coaches at the two 5A's he will attend for the 9th grade. He is a no doubt starter as a 10th grader

Keep NIL as is and lets keep throwing money around. Our family will surely appreciate it. Get paid

and to add- He's Holcombe on the mound and throws hard. "No idea where its going. Swear to God"

because its no longer a "State" thing. It's no longer about us. Our guys we have recruited and developed. Its just rentals.

Little Wool has already said he is down to 2 schools- State and LSU. I hope this is the case 4 years from now. Pay up. We'll see how it turns out but I bet he ends up being La Tech's best signee.

Finally a topic we 100% agree on. I'm not going to get excited about a recruit or good looking underclassmen when there's a 50% chance of them entering the portal. I can't fault them for wanting to make their money, but I also can't see them as "dawgs" anymore- just mercenaries we happen to employ for the season.

Is this what our world has come to, or maybe been like this for a while (James Brooks, Dexter Manley, Jamaal Charles, Kevin Ross, Jasmine Cathey, and countless others) give me the money and damn the education? How pitiful! They will be taken advantage of, financially, somewhere down the line either by some agent or their own family (Mark Sanchez, Jake Peavy and countless others) or they will squander their money away from a lack of knowledge.

For many football stars, money goes just as quickly as it comes. According to Sports Illustrated, nearly 4 out of 5 former NFL players either go bankrupt or suffer severe financial distress within two years of retirement.


Is this really the position you want kids to be in?

Just watch the local news in your area and one can plainly see there are college graduates who cannot read their own script. these are supposed journalism majors too. This is not just isolated to football players. kids are trained to simply take a test so the teachers can smile but in actuality, the kids learn less and the ones with little familial help do struggle more. facts are facts without all the politics that are involved.

Kids are trained to "take a test", but it isn't what the teachers want- it's the admin that pushes it. Teachers want to teach the subject matter itself, but Admin cares about the test scores since that's what helps get funding for the school and promotions for themselves

Teachers are a mixed bag like every other profession. Some care and want to teach, others want a job with Christmas and summers off and do just enough to meet score requirements and not get fired. Some are great, others incompetent.

haha- ya'll know how I get at times. I had had a couple of glasses of red wine last night- you know- to stay heart healthy. Just laughing some about the NIL. NIL will be on down the line for my kid. After last year's shitty summer its been awesome this summer how much time I've spent with him working him getting him ready to ball. As a coach, we love those players that work hard/steps up to be first to go in drills/constantly compete, etc. I'm getting to see that everyday in a player who also just happens to be my son. He would start for my HS team this Fall as an 8th grader if he went there. Came in 1st this morning out of the linemen in the mile run. Just a proud pop right now.

His mother is a White/Indian (dot not feather) mix who didnt play sports in HS. SMU grad with a double masters. She stays on them hard about the classroom and I handle most of the sports/training aspect. We'll see what options are there for him down the line and eval the schools.

Yep. Test scores are the #1 thing talked about by Admins to teachers. It's constant. It's hard trying to get kids that read on a 2nd grade level to pass a state test. Our US History teacher is really good and I think maybe 15% of his kids pass the test

Many MS young people cannot read or write script at all as it was dropped for a few years as unnecessary in today's computer driven world. My MSU grad school son's class was one of those. I taught him to sign his name in script as I feel it is important for legal docs and other applications. He has taught himself to read script. My last of three careers was 11 years as a MS Social Studies teacher. When something appeared in script, it was sad to hear so many students say that they couldn't read it. My local school district has gone back to teaching script. I think there was about a three year gap that it wasn't taught.

They dont even teach writing in cursive anymore.

Maybe I should have stated that some graduates simply can't read english.

My hope is to have both in StarkVegas. My 15 year old plays but he is headed for engineering school. Thats been known since he was about 6. Then the little brother wearing maroon and white. In a perfect world of course

Good luck to your son and family 34. Biggest issue for a 14-year is "girls". Things change rapidly but staying focus is a gift.

If a kid can read print, he can read cursive. My 18 yo son was never taught to read or write cursive, but can read script as well as I can, it's not hard.

At first he was adamant he couldn't read cursive, I gave him a letter from my mom (who can't print), he read it word for word, and she's 89 writing in chicken scratch.

He has his choice of 2 schools. He lives in one 5A district and the other 5A is a magnet school. He is eligible at both schools when he enters the 9th grade.

I want him to go to Calvary- the best football school in town. Private Christian school with D-1 signees every season. But Momma aint letting it happen because of education issues.

I'm also still trying to fix his arm angle and delivery. I'm not giving up on baseball yet. He is still very green and will get better.

You are confusing two unrelated things. Athletic ability and personal choices.

I wanted to be a MLB Shortstop, best in my neighborhood, best in my age group, but clearly not top in my High School. I worked harder than my competition but they were some fine players. 6-3 190 long athletes, better arms, with effortless power. One kid that beat me for SS in high school, only made Polks MSU squad as a walk on Outfielder (the shame) and then never played. But he was a great player. Then the MSU player that beat my pal, made MLB then never played much. A Mendoza hitter from the Dominican Republic was preferred.

But my sports habits had nothing to do with my class or personal reading habits. It's not like you play for 8 hours per day, you can do other things. I read math, science and business all my life. Personal habit and considered a virtue. But, If the government made it illegal, I would have continued to read illegally. I probably would sell Game Theory books in parks to other kids. Give younger kids gateway books like Harry Potter to make them junkies later.

Dexter Manley is lucky for his football gifts. Made him rich when his intellect was nowhere need his physical gifts. Lucky also to be born in America where 6-5 280lb guys have a sport to play. In Brazil, he would have been a large security guard.
