Amazing how good a pitching staff can be when they challenge hitters and throw strikes. I hope no matter what happens this year we find a way to keep Parker.
Just seeing the way Parker conducts himself, he may not be the worst choice for HC if (BIG IF) we miss out on the top 3 or 4 targets.
Hitting, Fielding, and ERA are all ok. What's not is the number of extra base hits and power numbers. It's one base at a time for us and why we lose so many close games. We also sacrifice bunt like damn mad men which further hurts us. We're at the bottom in saves as well.
nothing wrong with a good short game if it gets followed up with an rbi single.
If we keep Lemo we should probably require he fire the hitting coach. I think keeping Lemo may still be a mistake. Time will tell.
To me that just seems like putting lipstick on a pig.
We're right in the middle of the SEC in most hitting categories. Not great. But is that fireable? It's not like we're dead last in hitting by a good margin like we were dead last in ERA last year.
To me, not having a closer has been much more of an issue than hitting.
Now if Gautreau leaves or is fired or whatever that's fine but I would be surprised if that is a demand from the AD.
Which means the team has issues and your coach is scared to play for a big inning. You don't do that if you have players. And as much as Long is a fiery guy, Powell is a much better hitter. I don't really get the Long hype other than he's the only guy with some fire. He can't throw out anybody, and he can't hit. Lemonis & staff just hasn't recruited adequately. Going to be ugly next year. Were going to be hoping to squeeze into a regional this year unless we get rolling (we could).
I have always believed that as a coach on offense in baseball you do whatever your players do well. If they're more power hitters you play for the 3 run home run. If they're more speed oriented you do things to take advantage of that such as steal, hit and run, and bunt. You can absolutely cause a big inning by playing small ball. It's not about being "scared". That's all there really is to it.
It's not their fault that Highfill and Kohler got hurt. It's partially their fault that Hines won't adjust.
We don't know what next year will look like until after portal season ends.
We were able to land some good players in the portal we just haven't been able to land a Skenes or Montgomery.
I do think that having a legit pitching coach will help immensely with that. Especially the way guys like Khal Stephen have improved under Parker.
I'm very concerned if we keep him as well. This should be a PEAK year and it looks like we will at best be a 2 seed in somebody else's regional. Will require a massive portal haul to be as good next year as we are this year. Makes me think we will likely never host again as long as Lemonis is here.
Hard not to think Lemonis has to go. This team is not bad but as the best team in 3 years, it just is not good enough.
1. Arkansas 3.01
2. Tennessee 3.79
3. aTm 3.84
4. MSU 4.20
From dead last to 4th. Nearly 3 runs a game improvement, without our "ace".
Bama team batting is .311. If you just take their 9 starters it is closer to .325. They do have some pitching. This weekend will probably tell the tale of where State ends up in Hoover. Probably a Top 9 seed with Missouri still on the schedule though and that should mean Regional. Top 5 or 6 and very much in the Hosting talk. When is the last time the SEC had less than 5 in the Host Role?
Alabama is 7-5 at home and 2-7 on the road. There only two road wins against Ole Miss. They got swept on the road vs Kentucky and Georgia. Completely different team at home vs away
Well, as Parker himself said- "most talented staff he has ever coached"
I said the same thing before the season plus just having guys in their 2nd year as opposed to Freshmen last season.
Improvement was expected. But without a doubt- Parker has made our pitching better.
It stings tho that Simmons, Dohm and Loftin are down while Holcombe is worse. This staff really could have been the #2 staff behind UPig this year
If Parker isn't assistant coach of the year, I would like to see what someone else did. He took a pitching staff from worst to one of the better staffs and still doesn't have a true closer.
We didn't do a heck'uva lot in the portal a year after winning the CWS, other than Yeager. That's about what we're getting, one decent player and a bunch of average joe's.
