You don't see it in pro ball because catchers are calling the game and since it is their job they have plenty of time to scout other teams and have plenty of experience doing it. 99% of college coaches call pitches unless they have a catcher that they really trust. I would also assume Pilk can shake if he wants too at least that is how it worked when I was in college. In pro ball our catchers called the games as well. So actually pitchers usually aren't calling their own game. They have the ability to shake and go to something else but most of the time the catcher is calling the game.

It isn't micromanaging at the college level. The coach has the scouting report sitting there in front of them and know hitter's tendencies.

Well I am a believer it's better for the pitcher to throw the pitch he believes in best for that pitch than for the catcher/coach to call a game based on the hitter's tendencies.
