No idea why we stink so bad at defending 3s, but I'm gonna chalk it up to bad season. Last year, we were #1 defending the 3 in the sec, and we were 6th two seasons ago. For whatever reason, we are horrible at this season, but I will say it has to some luck for our opponents. I've said it over and over, but I will again... I watch 80% of grizzlies games, and nba teams don't hit open 3s anywhere close to the level they hit vs us.
I am trying to just do a reset. It ended bad but let?s look at this realistically. We were picked 10th in the SEC preseason and the biggest bubble team. We are a lock and finished 10th. Let?s see how things play out come tournament time. I really hope we get Houston as our 1 seed because UF Duke and Auburn would be nightmares. At least Houston isn?t a good shooting team compared to the rest and could give us a small chance
Our last three losses of our four game losing streak have been to OK, TX and AR who were at the time very low in the SEC standings and we were favored in all three I think. I sit on row four with a friend looking at the goal at home games. Hubbard can't help being about 5'!0" but he is usually a real mismatch on "D" which contributes to us giving up about 90 or so per game recently. Someone posted his shooting % in the last 8 or so games and it hasn't been good in the majority. I feel the lack of a point guard and him having to play it is also bad. He should be the two, shooting guard. It is what it is.
I want Jans and all three of these players back next year, all of these leaving and continuing to build around Hubbard forced to play out of position at point guard and being stubborn with the same doomed defensive scheme doubling the post and being about last defending the three in all the NCAA would bring about the same results no matter what college where the four of them were hypothetically together. Yes, I remember the Rick Ray disaster, but we are now 8-10 in the SEC regular season for three consecutive years under Jans with Howland's guys year one and two or so and now his revamped portal bunch with a few holdovers this season. Only winning the first game in the NCAA will show improvement or maybe even two games here in year three. Maybe this team was over rated. Kugel and Melendez weren't the 3 point shooters to take pressure off Hubbard and Clary may well have been a bad fit at State just as he was at Penn State(?). 6-10 last 16 games and recently giving up 90 ppg or so? Something is wrong with this "team". JMO.
None of that is wrong. No one is wrong to think that Jans has done a bad job this year. I think if you asked him he'd say the same thing. But here's the facts, from 2008-2019 we made the tournament twice. And would've only made it once had it not been for a miracle run through the SEC tournament. We lost both times in the first round. We haven't won a game in the tournament since Charles Rhodes erupted on Oregon in March of 08. We are about to make our 3rd straight tournament, something we haven't done since we made 4 straight from 01-02 to 04-05. It's ok to be ticked off with how we ended the season. It's ok to want more. You should as a fan base. But it also needs to be said that we're a hell of a lot better and more consistent than we've been in a very long time.
