Honestly if we can be decent in baseball that’s cool, but what are we trying to accomplish as an athletic department? We spend all this money on a sport the majority of the country doesn’t care about and we can’t even beat USM? I am just confused. Our fans have no interest in basketball which is one of the main sports that drives revenue in March. Our football program and the NIL we give them is a joke compared to the rest of the SEC. I just am confused what we are doing here. Is the goal to go to a smaller conference? I just would love to know the explanation for all this. Nothing makes sense from a national perspective.
We can make all the excuses we want. You know, "this is their superbowl, blah, blah, blah". That's BS. Truth is, we got beat by a good team. With that said, we have some glaring weaknesses and it's possible we just aren't quite as good as many thought.
Last 2 games...
Hit a guy on 0-2 pitch to face best player in the country. Gave up the hr. Then 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs and couldn't win it.
Tonight, 2 passed balls to lose lead and then tie. It was the winning run.
These might as well be the Shapen int vs Florida or the point return vs texas. We just find ways to lose
Let's settle in for the long train. We're gonna be there in the end and get another chance at the Blue Bitches and the Mustard Buzzards.
I just want to know why we schedule games down there when OM doesn?t? Or do they and I just don?t know about it?
I don’t see it. Too much soft contact, too many weaknesses. Settle in for another brutal sec schedule. It could get ugly.
Continue to piss and moan but we could throw every effing thing we have at football and basketball and still not make major strides IMO. That's just the way it is. At least in baseball we can be somewhat competitive.
Lemon lost another runner on the bases tonight. Cmon Cheese
Ehh, loss always hurts but we've beaten ourselves these past 2 games. Pitching management vs UCLA was geared for getting guys work and we ran out of arms. Not to mention the bases loaded 3-2 count in a tie game ball 4 that the ump called strike 3, should have walked it off right there. Vs USM boneheaded but easily correctable catching mistakes lost the game on the road to a top 10 team when our starter had a bad game. We fought back from down 5. Are we a perfect team? No. But are we a very good team that can make noise in Omaha? Yes. I know every team is figuring things out, but it feels like we've got more than most and so as we iron out what guys can pitch/hit/catch we'll get better than most, and we're already a top team.
I?m not sure this team will be there in the end. Leadership lacking again like it did under Lem! State has played only 2 top 10 teams. Guess what? State is 0-2 against 2 Top 10 teams. Beating Hofstra, Delaware, And Alcorn. So what. Struggled to put away Troy, ASU and Va. Tech late in games.
I?ll stick with my 39-17 (17-13) for now but I certainly could see revising that down when we get to SEC play. If we get to that, probably a 12 seed on the road for Regional and possible Super Regional. Cannot keep leaving Dudy Noble empty in late May and early June. That sucks!
To me, this was a bad loss. Bad lineup. Bad management. Poor execution.
But having said that, if you cant tell this is an Omaha caliber team, you dont know baseball.
We are really good.
Doesn't matter now, but at the end why put in a pinch runner and not send him? Having him on first means we'd need 2 2 out hits to score him. If he steals second we'd just need one. Surely the pinch runner has a better chance of stealing 2nd than Sanders (the 2nd guy we'd have needed to get a hit) had to get a hit off their closer. Just seemed like bad coaching to me
The problem is those "easily correctable catching mistakes" aren't getting corrected. And if our catching and blocking wasn't bad enough then you have that our catchers can't throw out baserunners. Teams are going to run on us a LOT in SEC play.
This team is going to be there in the end. Don't give in to the estrogen over a couple of games. Take your blue pills.
I agree we aren't going to solve the catching issue this season. We won't be a completely well rounded team at any point. But only 1-3 teams are in any given season. We have a shot to earn a SR and if we make it to Omaha have about as good of a chance as anyone. Unreal for year 1 of a new coach, even with NIL and Portal considered
all i'm saying is that aiden teel woulda made us lose 5-7
Meh, let?s get our mojo back this weekend before heading into the SEC gauntlet. Show those bitches we are back
It doesn?t matter what you write or even think. State can spend $30 million on football and $15 million on basketball and still be bottom 6 SEC. State ?Fans? can spend $10 million on baseball and still have to play in the SEC too. So, probably a program like State should be in a lower conference. Winning at that level in football and still going to bowl games. Winning a little better at Basketball and maybe slipping in as a mid-major. Winning at baseball still because several Mid-majors win at baseball.
When Alabama, Texas, A&M, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida, Missouri, Auburn and Ole Miss can spend double than State can on Football, State has no chance!
Exactly. Lots of correctable mistakes by players and BOC. Need to figure out the 3rd outfielder after Teel and Chance. Need a consistent batting order. Need to improve at catcher. Need to tighten up pitching rotation and define roles. Gotta clean up base running. All of that and we lost two 1 run games to two Top 10 teams away from home.
As it stands today, I will be shocked if we are not a national seed.
Dang, we were down 4-0 tonight before I even had time to get the game pulled up. Was Sweeney that bad? Hard to win games against good competition when we are starting off so poorly. Got down 3-0 to UCLA right off the bat and tonight was even worse getting down 5-0 before doing anything against USM midweek pitching. Had 2 chances at a high quality win and didn't get either. Very disappointing.
Vytas has been good in the OF. Nunnalee and Parker and Mershon have all had moments. I'm not too worried about the OF especially knowing that Teel was sick.
Our bullpen I think needs to be something like:
Closer- Webb
Set-up- Davis
Set-up- Pitzer
Relief ace- Sweeney (I know)
Relief ace- Gleason
Match up- Burns
Chone and Raymond need to work on blocking balls better. We need Milewski back if he is healthy too.
We are FINE. We have 2 non conference losses to a likely national seed and likely regional host in a true road game. We made mistake in both games and the game of baseball punishes you for them. It happens.
Foster barely pitched tonight. Makes me wonder if he is going to get another shot at starting on Sunday. To me, this would be ideal bc Stone could go back to the pen.
Stone I think has earned the Sunday job. Not sure what they are going to do but if I were in their shoes I'd try to let Foster pitch out of the bullpen for an inning or two Friday or Saturday and then start him against Tulane in Biloxi.
I looked at Foster's stats from last year yesterday and he did pretty good out of the bullpen last year. I do think he has starter stuff though.
