Depth if nothing more. I'm beginning to think our coaches think that is BY FAR our worst position because they've signed a pass rushing EDGE specialist and they've brought in multiple EDGE guys. I still think we need to start seeing some movement on the DL front.
What are y'all considering as an EDGE? Red Hibbler isn't going to be a JACK linebacker, but he's going to play DE. He's an instant starter and potential NFL guy. Sanders is going to be a solid pass rush specialist and core special teamer. We have a lot of visits with guys who will likely be the JACK linebacker. There are some that want to commit that they are holding off on.
Are there any running backs that we are looking at or do we think we are good with what we have?
#1 edge player in the portal per ON3 doesn't appear to be getting much action that I can see. With the situation we are on the line we should be talking to everybody.
On3 has us as the favorite for Nico Davillier. On3 really needs to update the size of the players in their data base.
This is honestly exactly where I am at. I am still baffled at how the JA thing went down. Without even trying hard, I knew what was about to happen there based on people in multiple other programs and I thought surely our staff would be ahead of it. And they weren't. I still don't understand Charlie having to call around last minute to raise money like we didn't realize that there would be a bidding war on any decent QB in this league. We would have been better off to have never been in the game with him than to take that PR hit. It's almost like we knew we were going to let MVB walk and we needed something to give fans optimism for a few days.
Also, Dillingham's first portal class was rated 17th in the country and produced 3 wins while playing a Pac 12 schedule. His second portal class was rated 30th, and the two classes combined to produce this season along with a light schedule.
I think we can get to 6-6. We're not as far off FROM THAT as people think. Arizona St will be down next year. Cam Skattebo's don't come around every day. No one will fear their offense next year like they did with him. And we get Arky next year, who may be worse than we were this year. That means we just have to pick someone off. I think Tennessee will be in a bit of flux next year. They lose a lot off that D. TBD on how OM will look. Losing Dart is bigger than their fans want to realize it is. They also will lose Nolan, Paul, Amos, Umanmielen, Ivey, and Pegues off their D. That's a lot of replacement they'll need to do and they have to hit at the same rate as last year. I mean the younger Umanmielen is nowhere near the talent of Princely. He's more a project than a bonafide SEC guy.
I see no path to 6 wins with us completely rebuilding the offense and struggling to sign DL/Edge/CB. I was optimistic last year, I'm not this year after seeing this staff at work.
Starting to break a little in some circles that Kromenhoek will be announcing his commitment to us pretty soon. Nothing official from anyone with some clout, but I think we could see a Nakos or Wiltfong tweet before too long announcing it.
It's starting to leak out that Luke Kromenhoek will transfer to Mississippi State. Hell of a job by Jeff Lebby!!
We got a QB
Shapen will start again. He was/is better than Van Buren and would've started regardless of what Van Buren elected to do. So you're not losing anything there.
You have replaced Craver with Thompson. Someone would need to step up to replace the Coleman production but I don't think we'll struggle to find that tbh. This offense lends itself to receivers putting up big numbers.
You do need to replace Miner but that's about it on the OL. You're just getting better up front. Not really a rebuild.
On D, you definitely need to find a starting CB and two war daddies up front at DT. But you already have one EDGE guy who could also play JACK in Sanders. You also have a true EDGE in Hibbler.
The lack of DT visitors and the Arnold miss is clouding everyone's judgement that through 7 days, this is a good portal class. Now, you can't stay with these same guys for the next 10-12 days. But this is a good start.
Any chance we could bring Fletcher Cox back as a d line coach or at least off the field analyst?
And........there it is. Luke Kromenhoek.
Number 4 overall player in the portal and no 2 QB accd to 247
Number 18 overall player in the portal and no 2 QB accd to On3
Edit: Mateer was added to On3 portal, was already in 247, so Kromenhoek dropped to 19 and no 3 QB on there.
