The thing is that in this instance it is not hard. Anytime there is anything close to a fumble just let them play. If it wasn't a fumble it'll get straightened out by replay. But you can't put points ON the board when a guy never actually crosses the goal line so it's totally unfair to the defensive team.
It's not hard. Why can't they just do it the right way?

A&M got hosed on the inadvertent whistle, that should not happen with officials that have more than two years on the field. Awful.
