The same thing we all think about him.

Here's my question. Why would we not pay that?
I get he's young. But our fan base is exceedingly unrealistic on what pay for play really means. If we want guys with potential and who can play, we have to pay. And it's going to cost a lot of money. More than we are comfortable with.
The reason we don't get guys is because we aren't willing to pay. Period. We won two games. It's gonna cost money to get players.
Time to get over it. You want to win? Pay these kids a lot of money. Every year. And get used to it. To get good QBs, the word million is gonna have to be in the sentence. Hundreds of thousands doesn't get you QB talent. Sucks but it is what it is.
I do not mind paying that to a kid who is worth it or has done anything to deserve it. Van Buren is not a good QB. He has good physical skills, ie. strong arm. That is it. He dirts slant routes, has no clue how to move in the pocket, has shit ball control, and has no clue how to read a defense. If he was true Freshman that played sparingly this past year that would be ok. But he played in 10 games and started in 8. It is not a good sign that he was still making the same mistakes in Game 12 that he was in game 5.
Had a text from my source a 7:50 saying Arnold was coming to us and then at 8:30 saying something changed in that time frame. These kids are nuts man
$1.1 MIL for 1 win? I like him better than some but not at SEC full time starter money. I would been ok with half that and incentives getting him to his asking price. I'm ok with that with him but not $1.1 MIL. Which he had lowered from his initial $1.5 MIL. Where is his visits lined up btw?
Our OL was trash and Van Buren is a true freshman. He does need work. But put him in the same talent situation as Iamaleava at Tennessee and he would look a lot different.
He knows the offense and that has value and he clearly has arm talent. And a good P4 team will pay him some money to come in. And what we need right now is talent. Van Buren didn't change the game for us as much as he could have, but his surrounding parts forced us to not allow him to manage games but have to sling it all over the place.
Not a good recipe for a true freshman inserted 1/3 of the way into the year.
We really really really suck at perception. Regardless if Arnold is worth a shit or not we need a positive perceptive media moment and can not do it to save our lives. It is unreal how bad we are at this.
And that is where this hurts. Perception. Now if we get the FSU kid, which looks like it is going to happen, we will get a little bit of perception back, but Arnold was perceived as a big fish. Now whether he is or not as a different discussion entirely. I personally think Shapen is better than him Shapen just can’t stay healthy.
Question from a non-insider hoping to learn more about how the portal game is played: What was our coaching staff supposed to do to prevent him from taking the visit to Auburn? Or visiting anywhere else?
Do you say come to State as your only visit and sign, or our offer is off the table?
Kind of but the main thing is as soon as it popped up you already have the money ready to offer what's needed to cancel that trip. If he wants to go still, then you pivot hard to your other options. Auburn brought Murphy in first, we should have had our other top options ready to fly in ASAP if they still crawfish about committing.
Doesn’t matter and you know it. All we’ve heard is “Arnold is Lebby’s hand picked QB to run his system.” The fans bought it and wanted it. Now they can’t have it and are asked to keep funding but can’t even get what the perceive they wanted. The athletic department at some point has got to deliver on something the fans want. It’s is unreal how much they do not understand this. Getting Arnold would have been a win within the fanbase. Does not matter if we get the FSU kid who is ranked higher and probably a better player. He’s not who the fans were sold on.
Um literally every recruiting expert has said Arnold was Lebby’s QB of the future at Oklahoma. And the thing about signing him now was to show the fans the Lebby had a plan all along instead of missing on a guy he had a longtime relationship with. That sell a brighter future than moving to portal plan B. We have got to do a better job of pushing a narrative and then executing it.
Agreed. Shapen needs some milk...lol. whichever Qb is brought in let him and the incoming freshman battle all early and often and be prepared to play. My biggest concern with Shapen is that he'll play trying to protect himself. You can't do that in football. We need to let him talk to Favre or Fitz.
