We need to change the model. Salaries should be stair-stepped based on season performance. Perform like an assistant coach, get paid and bought out like an assistant.
Losing should be a "for cause" reason to terminate the contract of a coach, if he or she is below a certain win percentage. Having to pay coaches to leave when they suck is stupid. Becoming a head coach in the SEC is like winning the lottery. Even if you only last a year, you're set for life. I like the idea of making the contacts for coaches heavily incentive based, as you mentioned. You want to make the big money as a coach? Win.
I don't really care about basketball, so I don't have a dog in the hunt. My opinion is Jans has plenty of credit in the bank due to 3 straight Tournament appearances. Unless it goes horribly wrong, this year is a free hit. But he'll need to start strong next year or he's got to go.
College coaches have a gravy train. Contracts. They don’t have to compete on a daily basis because you owe them big money if you fire them. I go to work and compete every single day because I can be let go at any time. And yet 99% of these coaches never win anything. They are constantly rewarded for a lack of success. I’m not talking specifically about Jans, but rather the entire industry. Kiffin has never won a championship and he is pursued. It’s honestly crazy. But it is what it is.
I was curious about some of the guys who left and how they were doing at their new locations. Alot of guys are playing really well, I know money plays a factor in alot of this but why couldn't we keep some of that talent we had on the roster? If we had a few of these guys still, I think our season would look a little different:
Riley Kugel 17.7 ppg 2.6 rpg 3.1 apg at UCF
Mike Nwoko 19 ppg 5.4 rpg 76% FG at LSU
Martavious Russell 16.7 ppg 3.1 rpg 1.1 apg at ULM
Keshawn Murphy 12.4 ppg 5.4 rpg 1.8 apg at Auburn
To a lesser extent Kanye Clary and Trey Fort are both at 7 ppg at Oklahoma State and Michigan state respectively and I would take them both on this team right now. At the end of the day recruiting is what matters and keeping your best players matter as well. As you can see we lost alot of talent and didn't replace it well at all. Again I know money plays a factor now but according to some who have more insight, some of those players were offered what they wanted but still left. Of our new transfers the only one that gives me hope is Epps and on occasion Mcghee... hopefully we can get this thing turned around because one thing about basketball is we have plenty of time and opportunity to get back on track. It starts against SMU next game, we desperately need a solid non conference win.
Murphy got a nice raise to leave and we didnt really encourage Kugel to stay. Cant speak as to the other guys
Keeping Kugel instead of Jones doesn't fit Jans vision for this team. Even though with Hubbard - having high scoring outputs around him is what we need. It just is what it is with Jans at this point and his ceiling is clearly showing unless he re-invents himself.
Let's start by making every player shoot 500 FTs a day and have to end on 10 straight makes.
Wow, we knew Keshawn would be a loss, but does anybody know how far off with NIL $ we were for Kugel and Nwoko? Several say Kugel was an attitude problem for the team, but the dude had talent when he was "on." I'm surprised Nwoko is doing so well at LSU, which makes me wonder why it seems a change of venue away from Starkville is what it takes for some other coach to get the most out of our players after they transfer - what are we doing wrong?
And it's not just basketball, just to name a few...
- Slate Alford turned into a great teammate with high offensive output at UGA on the diamond the last 2 years;
- Mario Craver with aTm this year (although we did upgrade with Brenen Thompson imo);
- Sawyer Roberson at Baylor;
- Woody Marks at USC several years back;
- Garrett Schraeder to Syracuse several years back;
I'm sure there are others that I'm missing but these come to mind right off.
Anybody watching Syracuse vs Iowa State? Good basketball being played on TNT.
Works both ways.
Thompson has done more this year than his previous 3 years combined. Same with Evans
Shapen is having one of his better years and his best completion percentage.
Lanier is having a great season.
Melendez was the same guy for Jan he was at Georgia
Kugel's stats were a little better last year than the year before- so was Nwoko's
And even tho Lemon couldnt keep the program where it needed to be- he brought in some great transfers that thrived for us- Reece, Purdue, Sully, Frei, Hugesack, Dohm, Ledbetter, etc
This and just being another year older. That's another year of practice, experience, growth, etc.
This is what use to make college sports so great. You build a team and they grow together. That's where dynasties came from. All that is a thing of the past now. Shoot from the hip on a player in the portal and hope.for the best.
Iowa State is pretty good. It was a 1 point game at the half. Iowa State won by 32!
