I don't think we should call Mullen. I don't think Mullen would come if we called. I totally reject the idea that we're somehow better off without him though. Mullen was great for us, and we were great for Mullen. That marriage is over now, but I won't bash the guy bc almost all of my fondest football moments happened in his tenure. I get called out for being the weird ex that hangs on, but that's really not the case... I'm the guy that can actually throw my hurt feelings out the window and appreciate our time together.
It's time to move on. Just like it was time to move on from Ron Polk in 1991, 1997, and 2008.
The question isn't whether he was successful or not here. And that's not the issue. The issue would be (I say would be because I don't think he's coming back) whether bringing him back would be good for MSU. I don't see any way it would be beneficial to us. Sure, he might have a good season or two. But he's just going to try to move on again and he has flaws that we simply do not need right now. We don't need to tread water and then start over again right now. We need to move the program forward with Lebby. I think there is going to be a ton of upheaval in the SEC in the offseason and if we can remain stable, we can be very good.
Would MSU baseball have been better off with Polk or Augie Garrido in 1991?
Would MSU baseball have been better off with Polk II or Paul Manieri in 2001?
Come on 7!!!! I smiled after I posted that because I knew you would do this!!!!
I'm with you Dan. Him and JWS are my all time favorites. But that ship has sailed.
He hit his ceiling here and he would be shopping day 1. We can't have that right now. We need stability.
JMHO.....Re hiring DM would be the second most mentally questionable move ever made besides going months without hiring an AD and pronouncing the town Stark VILLE............it would be ATROCIOUS and would affirm every bad joke and backward sterotype about the DOGS.....btw....excellent post Todd 4 State.....
Dan Mullen worked for the time that he was here. He's arguably our best ever. But, I'm not sure that success would have continued at the level he/we were accustomed to as the schedule has been consistently more challenging with the added P5 game and tougher SEC. He made a lot of hay against 4 cupcakes, and some terrible Arkansas, Kentucky, and Ole Miss teams.
My personal opinion is we were even better under Jackie from 1996-2000. And if you want to make it even more apples to apples- 1991-2000. We had wins over every SEC team in the league except for Georgia who only played twice during that time frame, won the SEC West, beat the teams that eventually won the SEC East or West multiple times: 1992 Florida, 1996 Alabama, 1997 Auburn, 2000 Florida and Auburn not to mention a lot of other memorable wins like 1991 Texas, 1994 Tennessee, Arkansas 1998, and the 1999 Egg Bowl among others.
The only seasons really comparable to that era that Dan had were 2010 and 2014 while Jackie had 1991, 1994, 1998, and 1999 that really stood out to me in that era.
