Me too. I have a sick feeling in my stomach about this. This may end up costing us a game or possibly two. Towles is an outstanding QB and he will take advantage of this. Ole Miss will certainly give us a little more trouble now than I was expecting from them before this.
Smokey has a long way to go
Question now is will the staff be fine with Calhoun, Cleveland, Smokey, Jiles, and Rayford, or do we burn Smitherman or Stamps RS? I don't like only having 4 CBs that can play (Rayford isn't good and I can't believe that either Smitherman or Stamps can't outperform him right now). And considering we lose Calhoun this year and Cleveland and Jiles after next year, I feel like one of those two true freshmen need to be on the field now getting reps to prepare.
The good news about this is that it gives us a head start on next season. I'm actually cautiously optimistic about Jamoral Graham.
He's extremely athletic, but just lacks the experience. No doubt, this hurts us this season, but, if we can get through Kentucky, we'll have an off week before facing a below average offensive team in Missouri & then a below average passing team in Alabama & Arkansas.
Really, the only team left that I feel could be a real problem for our secondary is Ole Miss, but we'll have 4 games to develop guys before that game. This obviously isn't ideal, but I think we'll be OK
When has Rayford even had a chance to show he isn't good? I still say he'll be big time by the time he's done here.
Is Jiles not better the Cleveland? What's Cedric's deal has he just not recovered from all his injuries.
F.....just F!
Suck it up and move on. That's what the team will do.
Towles gonna be slingin the rock all night long. O/U for yards and TD's?
Thinking 350 and 2.5 tds
Well, injuries happen in football and we were just unfortunate that its happened to our best DB after having already lost our most experienced safety. Hate to say it, but of the games we have left, not having Redmond is going to hurt the most in the OM game. They are probably the best passing team we have left on the schedule. We need some others to really step up in the secondary. Wonder if we will have to pull the RS off of Smitherman or just go with what's left?
It would be really bad to pull a redshirt off of anyone at this point. I can't believe they almost burned Dedrick Thomas's last week. Thank goodness Fred Brown knew the plays.
Jiles will be fine. I think it would be a mistake to move Cleveland out there. Ignorant message boards fans have given Cleveland a hard time, but he has been pretty good at inside corner. I don't want to see Cleveland on the outside though.
Correct. Based on what I've witnessed and experienced myself is that the majority of ACL tears come from non contact incidents. Most of the ones we've seen this year are non contact cuts or slips. My two ACL tears were playing baseball making a cut and turning to catch a fly ball. Played soccer and baseball through HS, baseball in college and the only two times I tore mine were non contact baseball.
There is a growing theory amongst Dr's in the orthopedic field that today's cleats are so well designed and grip the surface so well the human body (ligaments, joints) is not designed for these types of cuts and stops. Before you say "well look at Barry Sanders", yes there are exceptions to every rule or statement. Bottom line is the Dr's have seen a growing trend of knee and ankle ligament issues as the quality, design , and effectiveness of the footwear has evolve and continues to improve.
IMO, Will was our Dak on D. I think he personally masked so much of our secondary issues that this is a HUGE, CRITICAL blow to our chances going forward.
Before this, I was thinking we have a pretty damn good shot at winning out, or losing 1 more. Now, I'm hopeful, but much more skeptical about chances in every game.
We now need one of the younger dudes to, not only step up and be SEC starter-caliber right now, but be close to the level of Will. How many guys are there that good in the entire SEC, or for that matter, the entire country?
We need another shut-down corner, or we become much more vulnerable on every play. Do we have one?
That's all true and that's what will probably happen. But since the USM game, Jiles and Smokey have been coming in on the outside and we have left Cleveland inside. I think we are making 2 positions weaker by moving Cleveland outside instead of just one. I also think Jiles is a decent corner.
This is correct. Most ACL tears are actually non-contact, regardless of whether it's an athlete or not. Either way, he's a football player, and a defensive one at that. Risk of injuries due to contact are always going to be there. You can't play two hand touch at practice for every position on the field.
I hate it for him. I'll never forget the game winning interception against Arkansas and the effort that Will gave every week.
Hope he gets healthy and does big things in the NFL.
May have been mentioned already but thanks a 17ing lot Bracky. Between you and an ACL he lost over half his career. At least the ACL couldn't be helped.
Yep. I'm going to miss seeing him tackle people. There were times a big WR would catch a bubble screen, or a big RB gets a swing pass, or something. I'd cringe as skinny, lanky Redmond came up for the tackle. But then Redmond would lay the lumber. Dude hits a lot bigger than he looks.
We will miss Redmond as much in the run game as we will in pass coverage. Dude is a tackling machine
What do you cats think about Brandon Bryant? I haven't paid attention to him in coverage. He looked good returning a pick 6.
Logically Graham should start based on performance. In Dan's head Cleveland should start.
Graham has made some mistakes here and there- but he has also made some plays. The mistakes should be expected from someone who has played CB for a few months of his football life.
That's rough. Tough senior season for Dak, not catching many breaks...
And Graham has been abused and/or lost for half of his limited opportunities. And Redmond got abused last week as well. Don't pick and choose a play or game. You know good and well that he hasn't been abused all year. He has actually been playing pretty well for the most part. And I'm not saying he is our best cover guy but he is better than Graham right now. But Graham is right, he is going to have to step up and get better quickly. No choice.
I know we're talking about people stepping up and others covering spots, but this is a huge blow. Redmond will be back on that knee doing drills in a few months (Dr. Dugas at the Andrews Clinic does miracles), but we're in some trouble. Teams have respected Redmond's side all year. We may see teams opening up a lot more.
