Tater says that our AD is gone. Who do we hire now?
Tater says that our AD is gone. Who do we hire now?
I’ll do it for 200k and guarantee you 4-8 in football. Where do I sign?
I agree with Steve that I would go after Wren Baker. He has done well at WVU and has a lot of success for his age
Been known it was coming - just a little earlier than anticipated. 27 years as an AD is a great run. There were whispers of wondering if NIL was passing him up; however, no one really entertained that thought. OU has had a phenomenal run in many sports under him. That stability is cherished. He'll always be revered in OU.
Even in the what have you done for me lately space - everyone was sold on BV. I think the Arbuckle hire will do wonders and OU will be very competitive this year. Hate we missed them on this two cycle, but I don't think we'd beat much of anyone last year even with our schedule.
@Pancho - I didn't say he was leaving. I said he's favored for this job. Ultimately, it's up to people way above our pay grade to make the decision. But early thoughts are Selmon. Part of why he took our gig was to actually build the resume when this time came so that it would be seamless. Joe just is about 2 years early for Selmon's ideal timeline.
I actually am glad we missed on them tbh. I think Arnold or Hawkins would've killed us last year just simply running the ball and I'm really high on Arbuckle so I'd be very worried about what he and Mateer would do to us this year. I actually think we'll be catching them at a good time next year. We know that Arbuckle is probably there one year and will get a HC job and it's like you said earlier in the thread, can Venables keep making OC hires? I think the answer is no. I think he struck lightning in a bottle with Arbuckle. He got lucky that Dickert up and took the Wake job and pounced on the opportunity to get Arbuckle. I think if the Pac 12 was still a thing, I don't know if they pull that off. Because they only got Mateer because of Arbuckle.
Arbuckle is going to get humbled this year. Not sure what his HC shot is going to be next season. Maybe he can go get a big PAC (8) 12 job.
Man, look I'm far from a Selmon hater, but what's he done exactly? I'm totally clueless on NIL, so that could be it. New lights at the stadium, ok. Top of the line BBall coach? Phenomenal! But give any AD that salary range and potential NIL, couldn't anyone have done that too... even with the non-Target situation in S'ville (rolling eyes emoji)
Selmon has the name Selmon. That's why. His name carries serious weight around there. The plan has always been for Zac to take over but they knew he needed head chair experience. They were never going to just promote him. Now look, we may survive this time. Their president may decide that they are getting Kirby Hocutt no matter what or they'll go out of the box, far less likely. But look, there is going to come a day where Zac Selmon will be the director of athletics at Oklahoma.
Manning at Ole Miss if Peyton would've gone to Ole Miss is probably a more apt comparison.
Lucious, Lee Roy, and Dewey Selmon all played at Oklahoma and all went on to the NFL. Lee Roy was the number 1 pick of the 76 draft. Lucious ended up coaching on Barry Switzer's staff and was the lead recruiter for Marcus Dupree. And Dewey, Zac's father, played for the Bucs with Lee Roy and had a 6 year pro career.
yeah- the Selmon's are royalty at OU
We've lost a somewhat known quantity. We know Selmon won't **** up baseball. That matters here lmao.
But this not a thread discussing "should" we care about him leaving or not. This is an informative thread / not really speculative.
I'll post more when I hear more.
Salmon is likely gone which is expected. In any case, the days of Oklahoma football as they've known it are over.
Pete Thamel basically told us it was going to be Selmon. Retiring AD to stay on to help with the transition? No OU connections but Selmon is clearly gone.
Update:
Hocutt is off the list. OU isn't going to get in a pissing match with Cody over him.
The Cast "transition" plan is still being ironed out and will look different based on who the hire is. How involved he is and what not.
Names in the mix:
1. Selmon
2. Wren Baker - WVU
3. Jeremiah Dickey - Boise
4. Terri Mojahir - UCF
"Youth" is the coded term being thrown around as the hangup for some on hiring him. Given the age demographic of those throwing around this coded term it's not as... black and white... as Selmon just being youthful. - This is purely my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.
Best guess - if Cast stays on for multiple years then it's Selmon's job.
I've literally never heard or read one person say that.
I think 99% of our fans approve of him. Including the ones like me who were hesitant about him. Other than spending 7 figures on a makeover to his office, I have really come to appreciate what he's done here.
Also, JC was encouraged by OK to go ahead and step down, staying on in an advisory role through 2028. He's aged and the times have passed him by.
If he's race baiting.... then yeah. I agree with you. I'm in the group that questioned his ability 100% for a while, but race has never come up in any of the conversations I've had with Selmon supporters or non supporters.
Race pimps gonna race pimp. Gotta keep it alive!!!
Hard disagree here. Our issue was that we went inexperienced in a time where we needed experience. And then did the same in football. Then some people also want to bitch about which logo we use, but they always exist.
There's minimal to none of this prevalent in the State circles that I've travelled. Much less than you would think if you're an outsider looking at "Mississippi State". That's why any of them I bring down are shocked at how welcoming the campus is. It feels like home for everyone.
OU on the other hand.... (and to an even further extent, Texsa and OM)
I mean let's just look at which school's have had a non-white head coach in the SEC.
