I think y'all are setting yourselves up for disappointment on the record front next season. Next year is truly a rebuilding year. And I think everyone needs to accept that Kylin is gone. I'd be beyond ecstatic if he came back, but I don't see it. He's shown the NFL everything they need to see as both a runner and receiver. And they can improve his pass blocking up there, although I think most people way overstate how bad he is at it. But one thing is for sure, it will be a fun 6-6 instead of a miserable 8-5. And ultimately, I can live with that, especially if we show improvement as the season goes along.

There's also a different between getting hit and not getting hit at all. It's not like QB injuries were eliminated during Dan's era. There were at least a couple of years where we went through several QB's or we had QB's banged up- 2013 off the top of my head. And then Nick in 2017. Shrader and Stevens this year. There's a reason why the NFL doesn't run a lot of option with their QB's.

We'll know a little more about our team once we see if Kylin is actually coming back or not. I suspect he will be back based on what I have seen and heard. I'm going to hold off on predicting a number until at least after the spring game.

Fair enough. I just think it's a little easier to protect yourself when you're running versus sitting in the pocket taking shots. I really wish Kylin would come back, because I think he could improve his draft stock with just a few small improvements. But even if he comes back, I'm more concerned with the amount of talent we've lost on D the last 2 years, the number of OL gone and our WRs to see more than 6 wins. A lot can change between now and the fall, though, especially if we can land a couple of impact players in key areas in the transfer portal. I'll have a better prediction about a week before the season starts. I said 6-6 with Jughead last year and was bang on.

I agree on Kylin. I would want Gay back but his actions are just too much to overlook for me. We should have four seniors on the o-line but Eiland is not very athletic at all and that's an issue at OT. On defense again- it just depends on the JUCO's and how quickly they adjust and that always seems to be a mixed bag. We also don't know what kind of scheme we're running yet either. Davis should play immediately I would hope. Lawson- maybe. Lovett and Pickering should be fine at DT with Crumedy backing them up. Kobe and Marquiss are fairly productive and are seniors. Wheat, Errol, and Brule probably will be OK. If we run a three man front we may try to make Jordan Davis an Edge rusher but who knows at this point. We don't really know much about Jett Johnson and Watson yet. Emerson was highly rated last year even though he is young and Tyler Williams will be a junior. Murphy is an impact player and Peters really played well late in the year. Jarrian Jones did OK especially for a freshman.

Leach not only changed the Big 12, he changed HS football in Texas.

Most teams were still wishbone, wing T and I formations before he got to Tech. The HS coaches there started going to Tech for clinics and changed their teams. Leach showed them you didn't have to have all world skill people to run it.

I talked to a 5A (at that time, not sure how they classify now) HS coach from Texas at one of Mullen's early coaching clinics. He said they were a Wing T team and made the playoffs almost every year. He said he would have 45-55 kids out for football.

He went to Tech and after talking to Leach decided to try the Air Raid in the spring. Had the same 45 55 at practice. After putting it in in the spring, word got out among the boys at the school and he had 102 out for 1st fall practice. The next year they won State for the first time.

It's hard to convince the older guys in HS coaching. Their mantra is "we can't" a little too much in my opinion. No matter the change, they don't like it much.

My question is always, "why not?" and "how do you know without at least trying."

I wish he could have that kind of impact here in MS. But even after over a decade of the spread being run at both State & Northern Miss, most HS teams are still playing old school option, I formation, etc. in the state. It's really damn frustrating. MS really needs a change in the mindset of HS offenses to ever start producing quality WRs & QBs on a regular basis. Until then, we'll just keep producing players at every position on the field except those two.

Anyone who thinks a QB is safer in Mullen's offense than Leach's is insane.
