A similar situation is that women's basketball often uses non-eligible players for practice only. They often use males on campus to practice against. I think Tyson Cunningham started off as a practice player for MSU's women's team. So I guess you don't have to be on the team to compete in practice.
Do they pay these players? (Rhetorical question. We know they do.) couldn't this be seen as an impermissible benefit after eligibility? Are they counted as graduate assistants or coaches? It shouldn't be legal and Bama should be penalized but we all know they won't be.
