Ref, you think we will get an off day tomorrow? I read somewhere we could get 2-4 inches.
So how bad do you think it'll get in Starkville tomorrow Ref? Both of my weather apps are saying there will be major snow and ice
Haha...So here is the deal with tomorrow. It's a major arctic system that will dump a lot of frozen precipitation. This time, in the form of snow. Yes...I'm saying it, we will get snow. And I'm not talking about a baby's amount of snow either. We're talking 2-3 inches easily. The question for our accumulation is how much will accumulate on the road. Concrete and asphalt are tricky because you're relying on those materials to cool down below freezing to give you a steady base to build the snow on. Now this will be wet snow because the temperature will stick around freezing, which won't allow it to freeze completely down and drop the moisture content. This wet snow will mean that roads will be slick.
To answer the question about classes. Classes should run on schedule for the most part, and I believe we will run into a similar position as yesterday which will cut all classes about midday. I don't think we see the morning classes cancel because, for the most part, the worst of it won't arrive until the afternoon (this is disappointing to me since I have a class at 9 AM). But I'm going to keep watching this throughout the day, for sure.
I figure if there is any sleet or snow falling from the sky at 6 am that they will go ahead and cancel. They don't want another situation involving student wrecks coming back to haunt them like it did 2 years ago
Not nearly as much snow as the Golden Triangle, but you will get more of a sleet/rain mix than snow. This could cause some problems driving on 463, I-55, etc as there could be some accumulation. But I don't know how much accumulation will happen as you won't really drop below freezing. Sure you're borderline, which may make overpasses, bridges, and other elevated surfaces slick, but I don't think you'll get the accumulation you would if the temperatures were just 2-3 ?F lower.
This will be the cotton district tomorrow.

Starkville and the rest of the Golden Triangle has been placed under a Winter Storm WARNING until 12:00 AM Thursday
OFFICIAL: Mississippi State University will be CLOSED tomorrow due to the impending winter weather system. A decision for Thursday will be made by 6 AM that morning.
Starkville right on the line for 3-6". Wouldn't be surprised to see locally higher amounts. Just a roll of the dice on where the heavier snow bands set up.
