People put too much weight on single weekends or games - it's a long SEC season. Most people thought we would lose 1 or possibly 2 at Ole Miss, and figured 1 against Vandy. So instead of losing those, we lost them against a legit top 5 Georgia. That's baseball. It all evens out over the season. If we lose more than 1 to Tennessee this weekend, you start to maybe question things. But, I also would not be surprised if we sweep UT and follow it up with a sweep at SC.

TN is sneaky good. Their record doesn't reflect their capability of stomping our asses once again. Do I think that will happen? No, but I am afraid we will struggle against them once again

I would drop Reece in the order at this point. He?s hitting too much to be producing so little . Not sure what else we can do. Catchers have cost us a few games this year. Have we not had a catcher since Logan Tanner? Geez

But even worse to me is bad strike zones make you more likely to chase as a hitter because if they're going to call a pitch out of the strike zone a strike you have swing at pitches that aren't strikes. And fans can say "well the hitters have to adjust" but without knowing it they're basically saying that the players have to hit pitches that aren't strikes. Even MLB players can't do that.

Now I'm not saying that the umpire was the whole problem but it definitely contributed.

I agree with everything you are saying Todd but complaing about SEC umpiring is about like complaining about the weather. Not a blessed thing we can do about it and its totally out of our control. And ABS is probably years away if it ever comes because you could only use it if every D1 baseball team was set up to use it. And MLB customizes the strike zone to every individual player which would be a huge task to accomplish in college. About the only proactive thing we could do on that front is find a catcher who is very skilled in framing pitches. But Im more worried about the strikeouts we take looking when the ball is in the dead center of the zone or when we strikeout swinging on a ball in the dirt. Saw 2 of those just in the 9th inning of Saturday's game. As a whole our guys are just not doing a good job at selecting the right pitches to go after right now. Letting too many good ones go by and then we get down in the count and swing at junk.

Two things here:

(1) the umpires bailed them out on many border line breaking pitches. The game-2 kid walked 6 but should have walked himself out of the game by the 3rd inning. Minime even came out and had people warming up but the umpires gave him key outs.
(2) the MSU coaches left dudes in the lineup that are dog meat to those pitches. Milewski and Stallman were cooked. Milewski was only pulled due to pass-balls.
(3) That Volchko kid only had 1 walk versus MSU but all other games he would have had 6 to 8 walks. He averages 9 to 10 walks per 9 innings versus good opponents. He was terrified to throw his flat 100 mph fastball so he just threw junk. The umpires not only gave Vlochko and Vigue strikes and outs, they gave them length to save their bullpen.

That's why I am not embarrassed this weekend, this was just a taste of a shitty weekend in Hattiesburg if we did a Super at USM.

We have signed Will Brick and he is the number one high school catcher in high school this year. We'll have to watch the draft with him. High school catchers are historically risky picks for MLB teams in the first round and scouts have some questions about his bat so that is in our favor.

Defensively- he is elite. Definitely LoTan/Ed Easley caliber there if honestly not better. He would play a lot and very possibly start as a freshman.

Hey Todd, many mock drafts have Brick as a 1st Rounder. Hope we can see him in Maroon.

What's the deal with Mershon. He was the 63 best recruit in the nation, 6th best catcher, and #1 recruit in South Carolina.

Seems he came to campus at the perfect moment. What's the deal?

I'm not sure we plan to play him at C. Gets alot of OF reps

We looked at Mershon at catcher in drills in the preseason. The staff thinks he is better as an outfielder. I agree with the staff on that one.

Yeah I wish Mershon could be a plus catcher but it seems the staff doesn?t think so. If they did, surely he?d get a chance as bad as we?ve been defensively.

He was a catcher in high school but I don't think very many people projected him to catch in college or the pros. Heck, Tanner Beliveau used to catch some in high school as well but that doesn't mean he should catch for us.

Lot of guys catch in high school and then switch in college. It's a premium position in high school like SS and pitcher.

Speaking of Beliveau, he pitched a few innings earlier in the year and the kid has a fantastic arm but we haven't seen him in several weeks now. Like most of the frosh, he struggled with control but no more than say Jack Bauer and Bauer's contributing right now. Anyone know what's going on with Tanner?

he's working daily on those issues and currently hopes to be a contributor in 27

If he can get it together and we have a healthy McPherson, Vallincius, Stone, Miller, Bauer next year well, lookout. That may be the best collection of arms ever at MSU.

We also have some more really good freshmen arms coming in too. Wilson Andersen, Denton Lord - both draft risks- and Jack Carbaugh.

Also, we're going to get William Kirk back too.
