i don't get to watch much this time of year. other than getting frei hosed by 60 this past weekend have there been other poor sends/holds by the coach?

Theres been a few questionable calls to send the runner home. My biggest gripe is with whoever is teaching our guys to swipe 2nd on balls in the dirt. I understand the premise but we've had way too many guys get thrown out because they get a late read/jump and try to steal 2nd anyways.

9 games in and we have lost 7-8 guys on the basepaths.

A couple of years ago I tried to explain that runners dont know the game the way they used to which is why it was happening alot in today's game. But I was told over and over that it was Cheese's fault and we didnt teach baserunning. So now that the same problems persist under a new coach- it's BOC's fault and our 3rd base coach is the new Cheese

gotcha...just haven't seen as much as i'd like of the games.

and you're 100% right on players not innately understanding situations like they used to...even at high levels. i blame the travel ball culture....but i won't go down that road at the moment.

Even MLB shifted away from station-to-station base running and in particular stolen bases - so it's not just travel ball. The mistakes at MLB are less, but frankly when you don't run or run aggressively, there are fewer "mistakes" to be made.

Exactly. People act like baserunning mistakes are something that should never ever happen and that's just not reality. It's harder than it looks- which is why teams for years have had coaches out there to try to help. It depends on the specific play but a lot of it is about reads and having spatial awareness as well as understanding the abilities of the opponents players especially the catcher and the outfielders.

There are entire videos on youtube dedicated to nothing but MLB players making baserunning mistakes. Most way worse than anything MSU has done so far this year.

The thing about being aggressive on the bases too is no one notices when you take an extra base and it works or a player scores because he made a good read on a ball in the dirt.

It wasn't always Cheese's fault. But he was pretty bad. And way worse than McMullen. I can almost guarantee you that we go over baserunning more than Lemonis. And defense too.

I want to go 4-0 this next stretch, but if we lose one and face some adversity, it'd be a good weekend for it.
We need to see how we face some adversity before this sec schedule. This era is about building a team each year, and chemistry still matters in baseball.

not really even sure what you're saying here? station to station baseball is the opposite of being aggressive and taking the extra base.

and what i mean when i say that i blame the travel ball culture...not travel ball itself is this...there is less emphasis on game by game small details. the concern is tilted more toward showing off skills versus actually playing good baseball. this is very evident at the high school level and in some ways leaks into the higher levels. i'm not anti travel ball, at the high school level the teams that have a lot of players that play it are better because of all the game experience. if i have players that don't play i try to find them a team. but it's a double edged sword. i've been in the game a long time and the travel culture has definitely had some negative impacts.

Station to station definitely can be aggressive with baserunning. SB, Hit and Run, Sac Bunts, squeeze plays are all station to station - as opposed to the MLB/Travel ball focus on HR, launch angle, and selfish hitting approaches. With that approach your time and skills are focused differently so you don't develop the same tools and skill set

i think we are saying the same thing...you're just using the term differently than i do. to me station to station is sitting back and waiting on a hit ball to advance a runner versus steals, bunts, taking an extra base is what i would say is aggressive baserunning. other than our use of that term we are on the same page here i believe.
