I agree, Lebby has hitched his wagon to Shapen and Hutzler and will go down on the ship with them. On the surface, at least to me, it appears personal relationships are much more important to Lebby than actually trying to win games. Of course that was proven right off the bat with the hiring of Hutzler. No other SEC program would have even given Hutzler an interview as their DC much less have actually given him the job AND a 3 year contract. Absolutely laughable.
BTW Booth not playing in the 1st half.
This game will come down to if our defense can successfully bend but not break.
Because they're going to get yards. We aren't "stopping" their run game. It's one of the best in the country and we're one of the worst at stopping the run. But if we can get stops in the redzone and force FGs instead of allowing TDs, we've got a shot.
Of course, it wouldn't hurt to force a turnover or two..
I agree that is likely how it plays out but dude give it a rest. Some fans can hope, dream, etc. We don't have much hope anyway. Why do our fans want to poopoo on our own?
Fact is none of us know how this is going to play out. All fans have opinions; not sure why that bothers some.
Hey, if you guys are satisfied with a G5 level coaching g staff, knock yourself out. Having an unknown as DC is one of our issues attracting high level defensive transfers. Does anyone dispute the fact that no other SEC program would have given Hutzler the time of day in consideration for their DC position?
Where did I say anything like that? I asked you to tell me where we can coach it up better schematically? Everything else is just conjecture. We don’t know how any of that really shakes out. But please tell me what we need to do better to put players in position to succeed on the defensive side the ball?
Hey, I don't claim to be a defensive schematic guru but I do know when a guy's resume doesn't stack up to what most SEC DCs would have. But if we want to talk schematics, when you have guys running you over like Skattebo last year and Hardy this year, how about selling out a little more to stop the run with more than 5 or even 6 in the box? Especially when you are playing against a true freshman QB like we had at Missouri. It was embarrassing that we KNEW Missouri couldn't throw the ball to any degree but were still getting bulldozed by their running game.
We are stacking the box in packages and still losing. I’m not defending Hutzler, but it’s blatantly obvious that our issue is not a scheme issue. It’s a line issue. Every group on D, outside the line, is vastly improved and has performed well enough this year. You’re sick of losing, it’s cool. I am too, but I also think it’s important to address the real issues. Hutzler was a good enough recruiter to improve all three levels of our D. Our lack of depth and injury hurt us more than his coaching. If you think a guy that coached under Saban is the biggest issue, I’ve got some ocean front property in AZ for you.
Yeah man, I get where you're coming from. Alot of it is just flat out nit being talented enough against opponents. Last year we had a ton of broken plays where coverage would get blown or a guy wouldn't fill a gap and we would give up 50+ yard plays. This year hasn't been that bad. I honestly can't think of a really big busted coverage play or anything like that for this year but I'm sure it's happened. It's mainly a talent issue which does fall on Hutzler. As you said, it's tough to get talent to come play for someone who doesn't have a DC background. This year is way better tho than last year so if he stays on staff maybe he can recruit better since guys have seen improvement. Also... money.
Years ago the DOGS played west virginia I think, They absolutely ripped our 3 man front apart for 1 1/2 quarters. The def cord finally switched to a 4 man front and it completed slowed/stopped their off attack.....I know it’s probably not that simple.......I have always HATED a 3 man front.....
Good grief, minimal grasp of how it works my ass. I will agree that Hutzler has improved from last year but he is still not a good DC and is doing OJT. The 2 analysts we hired this year have helped him a good bit. I mean at least we seem to be lining up correctly now. But bottom line, I doubt anyone on this board had ever even heard of Hutzler until Lebby hired him. I'm done on the topic though, apparently you experts on this board are fully satisfied with the job he's doing including his wonderful recruiting job so I will leave it alone. But finally, for those wanting to blame it all on personnel, Hutzler is not just responsible for defensive calls, he also has a lot of responsibility relative to the defensive personnel we have at this point. He was sold to us as some excellent recruiter but its obvious he isn't. Our transfers on offense have been much more significant over the past 2 seasons than the ones we've gotten on defense.
Nobody here said that he isn't for blame. Actually every poster responding to you said they was not taking up for Hutlzer. I also said Hutzler is at fault for defensive recruiting but that is to an extent due to money. Everything you just said has been covered or mentioned in the last few posts on here. Not sure why you've decided to get so defensive due to explaining it's more due to lack of talent than scheme.
Talent is still the major issue. And like mentioned previously, that falls on Hutzler to an extent.
