All I know is that Mullen would have the right quarterback running the football... no way should Shapen run a designed quarterback running play in which he did quite often last night. Having said that, I still wouldn't want Mullen back. I do however think that Malzhan would be a good fit
Damien Williams started 1 game in his career here - the 2013 Egg Bowl. We all know the story of Dak coming off the bench to win the game, but I wouldn't say that Dak not starting was coaching malpractice.
The only other game where he got significant playing time was the 2016 against South Alabama, where Fitzgerald was benched after a poor start. You can argue that Mullen should have let Fitzgerald play longer, and I would probably agree, but it's not Williams had bad stats in that game or was responsible for the loss. Mullen went back to Fitzgerald for the rest of the season.
It's fascinating how this phenomenon of "misremembering Dan Mullen as being worse than he actually was" has been so widespread here and on other boards among Lebby supporters.
The quote was that "Mullen would have had the right QB running the ball"...and yet that wasn't really always the case was it? And that's at the QB position. I could have pointed out how he started Holloway while gaslighting the media about Aeris Williams blocking which just magically got better after Holloway got injured in 2016. Among other examples. Like starting Chris Jones for one season. Starting Zach Jackson over JT Gray. I could go on.
Has nothing to do with being a "Lebby supporter" at all.
Dan Mullen against top 25 teams in 9 years: 7-33
Dan was a good coach and I loved his time here and like Dan a lot as a person. But he beat the teams he was supposed to beat and never really punched above his weight. 3 of his 7 wins were in 4 weeks in 2014.
And this is coming from someone who wanted to hire Dan in both 2023 and 2024. I would take Dan back, but understand what you are getting. 7-8 wins and nothing more. And the minute he has success, he will be trying to get a bigger job.
I've been bashing Dan long before we hired Lebby. Truth is he wasn't as successful as Sherrill. Jackie had 2014 type seasons in 1998 and 1999 along with some very memorable wins throughout the years sprinkled in. 1992 over Florida, 1994 over Tennessee, 2000 over Florida all come to mind. 1996 over Alabama too.
Dan's typical season was four OOC wins, a win over an Auburn team that was down, a win over Arkansas and Kentucky, a decent win over Texas A&M and then an inexplicable loss to Ole Miss while he is trying to get a job at Miami.
