I?m really curious how this turns out.
If they pony up and pay him $4M, I would think that would cause a lot of dissension on the team.

Tenn apparently moving on. College coaches need to band together on this, and no one take him. If they don't, this will be a common deal
Yep, it's called collusion and MLB owners did this in the free agent seasons of 85, 86, and 87. Several players signed for way less than market value and some remained unsigned until late-April/May. Owners were found guilty, had to pay restitution over a three year period and several players including Kirk Gibson and Jack Morris were awarded free agency. The owners were found guilty of this because it violated the labor agreement with the MLBPA.
However, there is no such system in place in this stupid, rouge shite that we are calling college athletics, so collude against these spoiled babies. That'd stop this horse crap, but you know there are Ole Miss' out there who'd break rank to sign these shitheads.
These kids, and their handlers, will learn one day that the schools have all the bargaining power, but don't use it. The NFL doesn't have a development league. The NCAA is their dev league and without getting the exposure in the college ranks you ain't going to the NFL. It's just a matter of time before you become too much of a pain in the ass to be put up with.
This sport desperately needs to establish long-term contracts and salary caps like the NFL and other professional sports. That could curb 90% of the angst against the current system, all but the "they shouldn't be paid at all!!!" crowd.
What is the real push to change the current system? Ask this first, are the most powerful institutions under duress in any way under the current circumstances? Are they put in a position of need? Quick answer is no. They still benefit from the current system, until they hurt there will be no change.
A rare win in this hurricane of shit
It's not a win for the fans. Somebody will pay him what he wants and sign him. Count on it. They may structure it using some scheming, but someone like maybe Auburn will find a way. Ole Miss probably want because they think they have their guy.
Good on UT
It's gross but to the player, "these rich idiots will pay me, let's see how much".
But from a roster perspective, a coach would love to delete his number and basically freeze him out. "We are going to see who wants his current deal".
I commend TN for drawing a line. But they're 17ed now. Ain't it grand. :)
The best way to stop that and no one wants to say it or do it- especially Mississippi State- is to pay the players so much that the under the table offers don't matter.
That's what happens in college baseball. No boosters is ever going to outbid a MLB team for a player that gets drafted if the MLB team really wants that player.
