Jacques-imos is awesome- relatively cheap, you get tons of food, all your NOLA staples + unique stuff like rabbit, alligator, etc., and the atmosphere is laid-back. Only thing is you have to get there EARLY, or be prepared to wait at least an hour. There are a couple of bars on Oak Street and Carrollton to hold you over though. Check this link out: nomenu.com. You can sort lists of restaurants by neighborhood, couisine, etc. and it gives a review on most of them and tells you what to get, etc...
