Miss. St Women's Basketball

Press conference today Coach Purcell talked a lot about Destiney McPaul's role. I agree that she is needed both as a scorer and a playmaker helping get her teammates involved. But still, can't let up off the gas with her scoring to make room for her facilitating as a passer. For this team to be really good need her doing both successfuly and at a high clip. Even though this team has at times shown flashes offensively it has also shown a tendency to quickly and without warning go into a bipolar type personality as well. Need her to continue to stay foot on the gas offensively all the while continuing to help get teammates involved with her dynamic playmaking abilities. Again, need Mcpaul staying aggressive in both areas. Also need her getting to the freethrow line....score, pass or get fouled...all of this, ect..helps set the pace, tone for the rest of the team and helps keep them out of those extended focus and scoring lapses.

That Southern Miss game wont be a cake walk either. They have alot of experienced transfers from bigger programs there and are well coached

They run a 4 out 1 in type guard heavy offense and have several good 3 point shooters. Well coached Southern Miss team that brought in several good transfers through the portal this off-season. Miss. State will need to get out and contest the shots. (Note) Miss. State's starters and key backups played well, very well in that last game but the bench reserves came in the 4th quarter looking lost as a group,, really struggled. Will need these players better prepared to come in games and contribute when called upon. Still, I saw where Nataliyah Gray made a nice play on offense while out there.

Southern Miss. is good but Miss State has the better team, more athletic team but will need to continue to stay focused, play well similar to how they were for a little over 3 quarters during that Charlotte game, continue improving. Again that first 8 players look more than solid for Miss. State but beyond that no one has yet emerged as a rotation player though moving forward we shall see.

To be honest all you really need is an 8 player rotation. Its good to have depth though

Been looking to see more of the transfer Faith Wylder. She's a very athletic, noted 6-6 rim protector. Possible she could be utilized to come in games..adding additional length, helping as a rim protector, rebounder, ect. Also, she has good footwork, overall coordination, and a good (really good) speed level running the court. Appears a good fit for this system and style of play.

The women's basketball team is definitely improving though still need to become much better at closing out games. If you compare scores of Miss. State games and top 25 SEC teams it could possibly give an inaccurate impression regarding how Miss. State compares to these teams. Miss. State has been a team that even though making noticeable improvements continues to take it's foot off of the gas pedal in games and pretty much shut it down after about 3 quarters to 3 and a half quarters. Also, the coaching staff has been giving the bench reserve players opportunities to come in these games and finish them up..and they continue to provide very little defense, offense or rebounding while in. Still, that first 8 rotation players have been lookimg more than solid but they too haven't been as consistent or finished as strong as capable. Also, Miss. State is one of the better rebounding and defensive teams in the SEC. Though as Coach Purcell indicated yesterday..need to get better on offensive boards (including boxing out) as a team...and if they do these type things, finish games much better, and take care of the ball that they have a better chance to compete in a very strong SEC this season. Spoke well of Faith Wylder being able to come in games and help this team when needed come SEC play.

Also, Coach Purcell mentioned recently in an interview that they've been preparing a point guard package for Destiney Mcphaul.to better utilize her playmaker abilities. My opinion and not saying this because she plays for Miss. State (so-called maroon glasses)...but Mcphaul is actually the the most spectacular passer and playmaker that I've seen this season in women's college basketball, rare skillset...this from a player that currently mostly plays off the ball. If others feel that they've seen better that's fine.
