Msu Football History

The fact is overall we have history overall of not being very good in the Sec of beating those teams. We have a overall losing sec record. So, for those posted how things "will change" "we are last" "want recover".....makes me laugh somewhat. We have survived over the decades and yes things might not change as we never have been in the upper half of the Sec, nor we never will except for runs every once in a while. We use to say years ago IF we can just go bowling every 3 or 4 years out 10 we would be happy, LOL but true. Now it's we can win 5-7 wins every year is the motto and I think attainable. The sky isn't falling because the has always fallen for decades for Msu football. Let's put it this way, we are much better off now than say 40-50 years ago.
Yes, things have changed, so what, we will survive and yes again NIL has changed things along with transfer rules, but guess what, it's gonna change more. Have no clue if it gets worse or better.

I love Msu and wish the best for us, I ain't pissed off as bad as some are about this situation as I have seen the bad way more that the good as far as Msu football. I predict we will make a good run again one day or so LOL Hell it's our history!

Just saying and it's hard to read ED lots of days because it's always been "we eat our our" and will probably aways be. Social media such as message boards are fun but they are viscous now days also. We all have opinions and make up crap which start the pot.

Let's hope we get 5 wins with maybe 6.

The hardest part of being an MSU fan is having the desire to win, while at the same time understanding the reality of our situation and reconciling them in someway.

What MSU, the SEC, and the NCAA did to our football program from 1944 through about 2011 was criminal. From firing Allyn McKeen, not supporting excellent coaches (Murray Warmath and Darryl Royal), scheduling LSU & Bama for 30 years and never playing in MS, abandoning Starkville as a venue for games (which strangled growth of the town), trumping up charges against Larry Gilliard, the persecution of Jackie, and the stupid case against Will Redmond - all parties involved did their damndest to keep MSU in it place.
And the power structure wants to keep things that way.

So can someone older than me explain why we played in Jackson all those years? How did that make any sense whatsoever? Like you said, we choked the growth of Starkville for damn near 30 years because we MAYBE played two actual home games a year.

The same 6 teams have won the SEC title for the last 65 years. They dont want to let that go

Our program was extremely poor so we would sell home games to other schools or cities. Plus, Sville did not have the hotels to house people for home games. So to keep the sports programs alive- we just kept selling home games. We played Auburn in different cities in Alabama. We played LSU in BR like 22 straight seasons. We did start playing more games in Jackson as it started to become more of a money maker for us there. People just werent driving to Sville to go to a game

But wouldn't we have made more money by just having the game on campus?? Seems like that would've made just as much, if not more, money and we would have helped the Starkville economy. Might have had more than 4 hotels before 2012 at that rate.

Also getting to Starkville was a total pain in the ass up to 1992 when they started 4 laning 45. before that time most of 45v was a 2 lane HWY with no shoulders and it was white knuckle driving esp at night.

Oxford was smaller than Starkville back then, and just as hard for most of their fanbase to get to. But, they still managed to not have the same issues.

I remember before 82 was 4 lane all the way and you had to take 182 right after Mathiston and be on that two lane road for like the last 15 miles and that was a pain in the butt. I can't imagine 45 being 2 lane all the way.

And that was also around the same time that Ole Miss REALLY started embracing out of state students. This brought more money to Ole Miss and started bringing big time money to the city of Oxford.

Having driven to Athens many times in the 1980s, it was just as bad. It was 85 miles from my home north of Atl to Sanford Stadium. Yeah, we could take I-75, to 285, to 85 - for about half. That last 40 miles on Ga 316 - that was 2 lanes from Norcross thru Dacula, and Winder was 2:30 to 3:00 hours of bumper to bumper gridlock. No one tailgated in Athens because you couldn't get there.

This is why I've just about given up on State, our fans just can't get out of the loser mentality. People saying it's not worth investing in football to "only" win 7 games. Only? Historically, 7 wins is a great year for us. 7 wins (as an SEC school) means we are borderline top 25, we are relevant, we probably host an SEC gameday for a good on campus game (exposure), and we've had some good wins including a great win somewhere (many times Ole Miss). You are also playing in a decent bowl for 8 wins, which is a top 10% year for us historically. But now 7 wins is pointless and we shouldn't even try.

But all we want to do is fight about going back to a silly logo from 30 years ago (that means nothing to anyone nationally) and who will be the starting mid week pitcher next year. Our fans will be the one that kills this program and school.

Davis Wade was a lot smaller at that time. Was more about crowd size than anything plus Jackson js centrally located. Ole Miss played as many games in Jackson as we did for the same reasons. Sometimes there would be doubleheaders of MSU/Ole Miss games at times.

And heck- we stopped playing in Jackson before Ole Miss did. I remember Ole Miss playing Arkansas and VMI at the Vet in the 1990's. MSU hasn't played in Jackson since the 1990 Egg Bowl.

Well not really as people didnt travel as much then. I only saw 2 football games on campus before I got to college. We would only average 18-20K for campus games. But would get 35-40K in Jackson. The 1980's and the growth of our economy in the USA and especially in Mississippi was huge for us. They bowled in the stadium in Jackson. Scott Field only held about 33K then but in 1980- The Egg Bowl was packed in Jackson and had over 60K there

I think our ceiling is 10 wins. So slightly higher than what we did with Dan, Jackie, etc.

It's a big jump to go from 6-8 wins to 8-10 every year but I think we can realistically do it with better scheduling and better recruiting.

October 29th, 1977

I saw State play Alabama in Jackson at 1pm...we had to exit the stadium. Went to the parking lot with my dad and hung out eating a hot dog and looking at the crazy LSU people tailgating. Went back in when the gates opened at 5:30- watched Mississippi play LSU on national TV.

An SEC doubleheader at one stadium

Edited to add- those that know Jackson- for big SEC games traffic would start backing up to a craawl on 55 all the way back past Northside side as it was only 2 lanes then.

Couldn't see the forest of long term vision for all the trees of short term survival. All cities should have, and routinely update, a 10 (or 20 or ??) year vision with action items on how to get there. They should have committee's with city employee, council members, and citizens that force the action items into completion. Otherwise the city will function in a paycheck to paycheck mentality.

Which is unfortunately how Starkville, and Mississippi State, functioned until about the last 15-20 years
