Because we had an AD that always thought he was the smartest guy in the room but was really out of his depth.
In 2017 Moorhead was named the No. 1 rising assistant in college football by Sports Illustrated and Yahoo. A lot of people missed on that one. Turns out that Saquon guy makes playcallers look pretty good.
Any of you guys stop to think all the sunshine pumpers on Moorhead were just basing the hire being a good one because it was for SEC bottom feeder MSU and their opinion that it was the best State could do? ALL YALL know the sports media has never thought very highly of State Football so probably any hire following the successful tenure of Mullen could be considered a good hire! Likewise, if State has hired a name coach who wasn't in his twilight, they would have called it a stepping stone job. And likewise, had State hired Art Briles to assist his son-in-law they would have burned us at the stake!
No. Moorhead was seen as can't miss and supposed to complement the team. He brought in a quality defensive staff that held together a national championship caliber team.
If we just played every game like Auburn that year then we go 11-1 (maybe 12-0 if we still injure Tua against bama but that one ref was hellbent on screwing us) and are in the CFP. Probably lose to Clemson because they could compete with our defense (and ran the same scheme we did against bama in the natty). Moorhead, like Arnett, and Leach all chose to coach their way. Leach was the only one of the 3 we hired with the intention for him to do that.
Jeremy Pruitt was the top guy for 2018 coach candidates, today he is a PE teacher at a Junior High.
Reporters get the inside scoop in exchange for sunshine pumping for the admin. Coinz fell for the ring size BS bc he's smarter than everyone
What I heard was Cohen asked for advice from Stricklin on who to hire and he told Cohen that MSU hires rising assistants. So instead of going after people like Mike Leach we ended up with Moorhead.
When that failed miserably we went after established head coaches and had interest from people like Jeff Monken, Gene Chizik, Troy Calhoun and ended up getting Leach.
Our defense was elite but our offense was extremely one dimensional. Fitz struggled passing and our receivers were awful. Our o-line was average at best. That wasn't changing no matter who the coach was. If we had the portal culture we had now we might have been able to get some receivers and a QB to take us over the top.
Apparently Akron doesn’t have people taking test for their athletes as most do. You rarely ever see athletes suspended because of academics any more.
Moorhead tried to make Fitz do calculus instead of letting him rip lines and play like he was used to with simple reads and out-talenting people. Moorhead isn't a head coach, he's a wannabe NFL QB coach with his complexity. Auburn had a stout team that year and our line did just fine against them.
Go rewatch the Kentucky game. There's one set of downs in particular where our LT kept getting beat that was purely bad scheme against a top 5 pick. If we had Mullen as head coach and could still luck into Shoop not Grantham then we'd have threatened Clemson for the natty.
Cohen got taken on this hire. The minute you hear moorhead go into his coach speak jargon you should know what he is. It was evident extremely early on once he took the job....well before the started. Then watching him on the sideline and pre/post game it was so embarrassing.
Go to any high school coaching clinic in Mississippi and find the guys who were just hired for their first head job at any 4A or below and you will immediately recognize the traits and mindset that moorhead had and why he failed as an D1 head coach.
Seen as Can't Miss by who? John Cohen? Mrs. Moorhead? His daughter? Come on man! I was at the airport when he got off the plane. When he asked the players their ring size, several of us started laughing. He just looked like a big goof ball and has proved he was what he looked like. At the Bin serving Smothered Fries to show he was a man of the people. I was sitting at the bar the night of his radio show where he told the fans to "kick rocks!"
Media thought he was the perfect fit for a program like State. As simple as that! If he was all that, he would have had multiple opportunities to choose from and State would not have been the choice of a guy from the Northeast! As has been said, Jeremy Pruitt was to top assistant and rising star that year. Pruitt was awful, but was better than Moorhead! The one thing you can give Moorhead credit for: Ole Miss hiring Lane Kiffin because their admin was sick and tired of losing to State and being the second rate team in Mississippi. Ole Miss owes Moorhead a debt of gratitude. And they owe Cohen the same for hiring a guy that could do the one thing that mattered most to the Cigar boys: Beat Ole Miss! 1-11 would be a successful season for most of them as long as the 1 is Ole Miss! We have never had the money men who really wanted to win big! I'll take 10-2 six ways to Sunday if the 2 or to either Alabama or LSU or Texas and Ole Miss! 10-2 in the current environment will be playoff bound every year!
