2 4* and a3* is good but I would not say we're killing it. Sign a 5* instead of where the 3 is then we'll talk
The knock on Jans was his HS recruiting. He's doing very well so far.
Our basketball money guys are far more organized than football and even baseball. We've got a legit network.
I was a skeptical of Jans recruiting initially myself but he is definitely improving, these are some good pick ups. Sam Purcell is doing the same with the girls, he already has 2 top 50 4 star players committed.
See what happens when you give a coach time to build a program. Well a coach who knows what he/she i doing.
.
If Jans can start recruiting top players then we have a good chance to be in the top 5 of the conference on a near yearly basis. Also holding onto Jans is key but if the NIL is in good shape for hoops then it will be a lot easier to keep him here
Certainly there is a huge step up when you get one of those freshman that is an immediate difference maker and NBA prospect, but with the way Jans coaches, getting a stable of well thought of players is huge. When you dont' have a good x's and o's coach, then having that one superstar that can make things easy for everybody else is just a massive difference, even if it means your quality drops off at the bottom of your rotation. When you do have a good coach, having a full team of good players is almost as good as having that legit superstar.
Two things can be true at the same time. One is that Jans is doing a good job recruiting, we have a good recruiting class, and we have many reasons to be excited. Two is that the class is not as good as the #4 ranking shows, and we will not end up with a top 10 recruiting class. For example, we are ranked #4 and Duke is ranked #8. We have 3 commits (#46, #111, and #118). They have 2 commits (#2 and #21). Anyone with a brain would take Duke's class over ours. The reason is that basketball is built upon having the top end guys. You can't play but 5 players at a time, and they play the majority of the game. So it's more about quality than quantity. Having said all that, Jans needs to keep working the high schools hard, and continue to fill needs through the portal. I have no issue with what he is doing.
This is the biggest difference in them vs us. If they had the #4 class, every ole miss fan on the planet would be posting it all over social media. All the state news outlets would be reporting it. It would be everywhere you look until everyone believed it as fact. That's what they do.
This is what we do.
Seems like most of the 5 stars are not committed yet so this won?t hold once those guys start signing, but def encouraging that Jans is getting good HS guys. Finishing top 15 a few years in a row with his coaching will be a multi year sweet 16 run
Yes which is what we need to aim for. Great we're doing good at recruiting but I doubt we end up top 10. As mentored above bragging about being 4 now is something ole miss fans do. They are about media headlines. We're about results when it counts. Jans is heading in the right direction. The more he moves in the right direction, the easier it gets and more people put in.
It just feels like something is brewing (all good) in Bulldog basketball. Bulldog basketball is turning into a meaningful season. Lately Auburn has done it, Bama, UT. I think it is our turn now.
And a realist. Can?t compete against SEC teams that are getting 5* guys day in and out. But if you have 10 overall 4* guys you can. Got to start somewhere.
