The thread in Gus and Gene tells me all I need to know about cheesedick. He is a horrible coach, and if not for cam and Gus he would have never even sniffed a title. His shitty record as a HC didn't lie. He just found the end of the rainbow with cam, and Gus was the apparent mastermind behind it all.

I say Gene is the worst HC to ever win a title but I could be wrong. Still young and haven't witnessed as much football as some. Are there any other candidates?

Larry Coker was pretty bad. Took a bunch of talent accumulated by Butch Davis, won a NC, then proceeded to set back their program for years to come

Are you serious, or just uninformed, or just don't like him? Holtz was a very successful coach were ever he went.

Definitely Gene. He's a bad coach that ran into a circumstance of having one of, if not THE most dynamic college football player to ever play the game. Add the fact that they had 20+ seniors and you had an experienced team that did what they had to do to win. But it was pretty obvious Auburn didn't have a good defense and weren't developing talent. I've never heard of a college team that won a national championship that had only 3 guys get drafted.

Malzahn will develop the talent needed to compete, but eventually college football, especially the SEC, will catch up to the speed with which they play and stop them. We've shown we can do it at times like this year and in 2010 when they only scored 17 with Cam. To me, when you look at the teams in the upper echelon of the SEC, Auburn is the team we can aim to be and go toe to toe with. They've been just a little bit better almost every year under Mullen but that gap is closing. We lost to two of Auburn's best teams in their history by 3 points in 2010 and 4 points in 2013.

Bobby Ross (1990 Georgia Tech) was pretty mediocre overall, except for the one year. Not horrible, but not the typical national championship coaching resume.

Would we have won the NC if we had paid the $180,000 and not gotten caught doing so?

I doubt it. We don't have Auburns luck. We were a better team though, other than Cam.

1.Gene Chizik
2.Mack Brown
3.Dennis Erickson

Mack may not be what he once was, but hes not the 2nd worst coach to win a NC. He had 9 straight season where he won 10 games or more. He had 14 straight seasons where he won 9 games or more.

You dont have sustained success like that and be a bad coach.

I'm convinced that Chizik was hired for the sole reason of being a liaison to the boosters who could be trusted to fully cooperate. He was never intended to run the show. He was done when whoever was in charge of hiring an OC (himself or otherwise, and I'm thinking the latter) whiffed by hiring a new OC with a completely different philosophy than the old one. Under those circumstances, I don't know if I even count him as a head coach.

I believe we definitely would have competed. Won the whole thing? Who knows?

With Cam, we win 11 games. We beat Arkansas and Auburn, but probably still lose to Bama and LSU.

Gonna disagree on Coker- he won a title and then got ****ed by the refs the next year in the title game (cost me a grand- was the final game of a 3 team parlay- will NEVER forget). Season 3 he went 11-2 and finished in the top 5 for the 3rd year in a row. Won 9 or more games 5 of his 6 years

Bobby Ross won a NC and then led the Chargers to a Super Bowl. Hard to put him in the group also.

The answer is Cheeze and nobody else is even close.

I think we beat LSU that year- we were still in the game in the 3rd quarter until Relf went out. They started blitzing Russell and it got ugly.

I'm not sure we could have beaten Bammer though. I think we would have been 11-1

I agree Mack has went downhill but he was once a great coach. He needs good assistants to thrive but he's a great CEO type.

Mack also won at NC where not many have won.
