I have an idea about the theory that prompted the thread and it's not to figure out who's a masochist, although related. I think the theory is - those who complain, are 98% negative, and short sighted enough to tweet (or whatever it's called now) temper tantrums at players/recruits personally - most likely did not attend or graduate from State.

Late SuperDog Father also attended State. Worked at Blue Bell spreading cloth on the night shift. Commuted 2 hour drive to and from daily his junior year of college as he was married with myself and my younger sister at home (both preschool). Finally dropped out from that strain and began a lifelong very successful career with Farm Bureau Ins in NE MS. Passed away much too young at 59. Raised me hardcore MSU as I have my now 22 year old son. Hail State!

I Graduated from Memphis State. Long story.

However, prior, Dad graduated from Mississippi State and worked at Mississippi State for many years. We sat in the faculty/staff section and wore maroon. That cemented my fandom. My kid is a current student at Mississippi State as well.

I know many people that have the sheepskin from Mississippi State that don't give two damn about Bulldog athletics. I give more and have attended many more games than most Mississippi State graduates.

Was born and bred Maroon and white. I didn't graduate, went to mcc and wasn't a big fan of the classroom after my baseball career ended, got offered a great job after mcc and took and been working ever since. My dad got his undergraduate and phd in forestry from State after he returned from serving in the Marines in Viet Nam in the 70s so I spent a good portion of my youth roaming Starkville and wandering around the campus. All my children are Dawgs!

As many have said you have to be true Maroon to be a gluten for what we've been through but I wouldn't have it any other way!

There's a very prominent MSU family from Inverness who did the Delta to Chicago run well before I did and we knew them; in high school, I checked cotton on their place while working for an entomologist...but yeah, they are (mostly) in a league of their own.

Okay, it seems that my hypothesis is correct. We don’t have the walk on alumni that the bammers and confederates and tigahs do. We by and large have graduated, attended the or have a family tie that have bound us to the Maroon and White. That said why is it that we can not ever get on the same page with each other? We are a divided, ignorant a for some unknown to me reason entitled. In my experience we can get to the highest point of college athletics in both men’s and women’s sports. But, we have no sustainability in those highs. Even at the highest points we as a group are constantly bitching about some small issue or looking for something to be scared of.

We will never have the resources the majority of the other schools in our league have. But we have been competing and competitive. In this new era of the NIL and unlimited free agency the only way we keep up is to have a unified vision and voice.

I am very skeptical that we ever will, we are one of the most educated fan bases there is in FBS yet we continually act like the dumbest bunch of ticks on the block.

So the fans of Bama and LSU pretty much all expect to have elite programs. The boosters provide big money and the ADs buy the big coaches to have elite programs. Thus, all the fans are happy.

At State, we have fans that want to be elite and so want us to behave like Bama/LSU. We also have fans that are happy to make a bowl game because they've been conditioned from the 70s-2000's that that's pretty good for us. Then we have fans in the middle (like me) who think anything from 7-5 to 9-3 is a reasonable expectation but don't expect to compete with Bama/LSU.

Point is, we have different expectations for our program and different ideas of how to get there, so we bicker about what direction to go in and how to use our precious money. But at the big schools, they just throw money at their problems and therefore make the fans happy

Sorry that you were unsure about all this. We don't have sidewalk fans. You have to win a lot of games and championships to have those. But I live out of state, and I'll tell you a quick story... in 2014 I was once walking in a grocery store wearing my MSU gear and this little boy, about 12 years old, pointed at my shirt and told his little brother (probably nine or 10), "That's my favorite team. That's the one Dak plays on". Of course we were #1 at the time but it shows that it can be done, even at lil ole Miss State.

Lived most of my career out of state well aware of that fact, the hypothesis is that we are well educated yet divided and ignorant of the facts that face our institutions ability to compete.

Point is, we have different expectations for our program and different ideas of how to get there, so we bicker about what direction to go in and how to use our precious money. But at the big schools, they just throw money at their problems and therefore make the fans happy

I also spent the majority of my career outside of the state, the hypothesis is that we are a well educated base, yet we are ignorant of the facts of what it takes to compete and can never speak with a single voice or put all of our efforts into pushing something we need to forward. We fail mighty here and the confederates can do it well. We are to busy tearing ourselves apart.

More bama fans in my NE MS county with the bama stickers (that outweigh the value of said vehicle BTW), on their vehicles than State & OM combined. Most don't even know the way to Tuscaloosa or ever heard of "Tusk"! Takes a lot of guts and love to be "True Maroon"!

Golden oldie W girl here, but many family did, and hopefully will in the future. I was born into it. Ha, the night I was busy being born, my dad & grandad were busy listening to Tulane pummel State 50plus to zero, on the radio, in mom?s hospital room (was well before tvs in hospitals or homes). It was a definite harbinger for things to come, yet I am an unapologetic, relentless, optimistic MSU fan, for life. In my family, if you support Ole Miss, in any shape or form, you are a black sheep, lol. That has not changed.

Okay, it seems that my hypothesis is correct. We don?t have the walk on alumni that the bammers and confederates and tigahs do. We by and large have graduated, attended the or have a family tie that have bound us to the Maroon and White. That said why is it that we can not ever get on the same page with each other? We are a divided, ignorant a for some unknown to me reason entitled. In my experience we can get to the highest point of college athletics in both men?s and women?s sports.

We do seem to have the dumbest football alumni anyway.

I attended and graduated from State.

No I graduated from Union University. I have a niece and nephew that are State grads. In fact I have only been on the campus once with a cousin in the early 90s at an Egg Bowl. Even did a year at a school that everybody hates here. Worst year of my life. This farm boy didn't fit in there. But I have been to every State trip to Memphis, bowls or against the Tigers since the 90s. Being from rural farm people State has always been the team I pull for.

Being a graduate or not has nothing to do with people agreeing on different subjects. I think all want MSU to win, they just differ on how.

Pick any subject, we'll all disagree at some point. On many other subjects it has to do with what kind of world view many of us hold. Common world views will see things in similar light almost every time.

There's a commonality at the core that binds us. And as I've always said to folks, if you and I are always nodding up and down together, only one of us is doing the thinking.

I graduated from MSU in the spring of 2000 and then from UMC in 2004.

About 80% of my family went to MSU and played baseball at MSU and then the other 20% went to Alabama. Like actually attended and got degrees from there. They're not like football fans and want to pull for a winner. I have family that played football at Alabama too for the Bear in the 1960's and was on the team that won his first NC there.

I did. My uncles on my moms side and my grandfather did. My mom went to Ole Miss because it was closer to home and hated every minute of it. Some fun times at State when I was there, also some bad times.

Coursesuper to your point, I think it all boils down to leadership. During the Greg Byrne era I think the whole base was in lock step. He set a vision. Everyone knew the vision and that they were needed and quite frankly were wanted, to help fulfill that vision. We began marketing ourselves and inviting everyone in. I used to love the here?s what?s up videos the athletic department did and the weekly or monthly emails from Byrne.
That?s why the two Lebby events have lit a fire. People want to be a part and want something fresh and new. We have that now, we just have to capitalize on it. A Selmon and Lebby video out lining the future of the football program sent out right now would fan the flames like crazy.

Let people feel the passion, the give them a purpose, and finally let them feel empowered.

True, you must also have to put it in the context of who put that guy there and how did it happen. We had a good AD within our context, but that leadership evolved into a poor hire that hurt us in the long run.

I love this. It would also cut down on the ambiguity and feeling like "what in the heck is going on?" Anytime there's a void like that, our imagination or what others are saying will step in and fill that void. Between our football history, some people just having a pissy attitude in life, and social media/news that wants to fire/jail/cancel everyone all the time, negativity builds to a fever pitch quickly. I like the idea of a coordinated, strategic effort involving audio/video, social media, email, and extras and vintage a/v on hailstate+. Anything involving Jack Kristil and I'm on board.

We graduated at the same time. Those 1996-2000 were probably MSUs greatest years of sports. Final 4, Omahas, SEC CG, CJ Sirmone, smashing UK in basketball. We were probably classmates in Dr Carskadon'e psychology class.
