What is the fascination with throwing a pass behind the LOS on 3rd and short?

I've seen a rash of that this year. Even good teams do it and get blown up. Ok State just turned 3rd and 2 into probably 3rd and 7 from where the back caught the ball and of course they lost yardage.

It?s a modern day running play. Way to stretch the defense. Just like a third and 2 can get blown up in the backfield it does not always work, but does make the defense have to plan for it
