I dont understand how any of it works bc there are teams with some pretty mediocre records like 19-14 that are 2 or 3 seeds higher than us. But basically we have to play an extra game to get to the first round of the tournament

We should make a forum rule that bans the unofficial and inaccurate label of "play-in" game.

We are already "in." We aren't playing for that right anymore.

I don't understand either. We been playing a play in game for a month while teams like Aub, Ark, and others are comfortably in the whole time no matter how their losing streak is.

Well, looks like all the prognosticators here and elsewhere were wrong. Looks like this draw was predicated on our last 3 performances and our lack of historical success as a program. I really didn't think we were a play in game. I truly believed we'd be a 11 seed but did not expect the play in.

I agree don't like the playin game label but not sure what else they would call it. Last four in bracket?

Our NET ranking is 48, so being one of 6 11 seeds is about right by that metric. I think it's fair, especially as we had a losing conference record.

maroonmania
03-12-2023, 05:31 PM
A lot of subjectivity with the committee among the last few teams and we don't have much clout in basketball. Look at it this way, we had 12 total losses and 3 of them (25%) were to the #1 seed in the entire tournament. We have to be just about the only team in the country that had to play Bama 3 times.

All the "insiders" on this board need to stop acting like they know what's going on because they don't.

I hate this play in label because technically your not in the field of 64. We still have to win a game before the tournament starts.. its an extra game to play..I'm glad to be in but I'd prefer to not have to win a game 1st

SpaceBully

I agree. In principle I'm not really sure why they expanded from 64 to 68 anyway making 4 teams have to win an extra round unless they were going to use it to let 15/16 seed type teams do a 'play in'. Better than getting left out though.

Those teams had more Q1 opportunities. They all played in early season tournaments and neutral site one off games with Q1 teams. It also hurt us that we had to play Ole Miss and USCe twice because those were Q2 and Q4 wins at the end of the day.

It's a thin line. The Arkansas and Auburn seeds make no sense. It's like their last 2 months don't count.

Conversely, we beat Drake, Georgia, and Florida and we're a 5 or 6 seed. We lose to TCU, Marquette, or Utah and we're sitting at home.

Now, hit a few threes, beat Pitt and make a hard nosed run to make a statement and surprize the basketball nation! We should and can surprise some teams if we play like we did out of the gate when we went 11-1. Hail State!

They changed the terminology back a few years ago, so Pitt is among the First Four, but if we beat them, our game against Iowa State is officially the first round, not second.

But yes, it's obviously an NCAA Tournament appearance.

We are in because if we win we keep advancing. Those "out" can't ever get "in". It is also true that we have to win in order to be the 11 seed in the field of 64 as the tourney is drawn up.

Complete BS that an 11 seed has to play another game while 12-16 seeds in all other brackets don't have to? Can anyone explain that so it makes sense? Answer is no. Stupid.

It counts in the record books as making the NCAA. We are now up to 12 appearances. Doesn’t matter if you are a 1 seed or a 16 seed. Win or lose it won’t be taken away even if some of our “fans” don’t like it.

They did in 2015 and officially recognize it as an NCAAT appearance. Some will tell you that?s only because they won and got to play a second game, but that?s simply not true.

The explanation I heard was the other lesser teams got automatic bids so they don't have to have a play in. Stupid rule.

They will not do it for football. The highest ranked teams will be seeded accordingly. Stupid to not reward the best teams. Put those mid majors in a power 5 and they ain't winning the conf.

They're the last teams in the tournament. I actually don't think it makes sense to have 16-seeds play these games. They're automatic qualifiers and should be in. Make the last 8 at-large teams play each other to get in if you're going to do it.
