Revenue down from $833.4 mil in 2021 to $802 mil in 2022. Distributions to member schools dropped to about $49.9 mil, down $4.7 mil from 2021. Writer thinks this is a temporary occurrence. Bubble bursting in crazy sports world?

Shocking to me that the the SEC could be down 4% in revenue. That's actually a huge drop when you consider that's a 4% drop with 8%+ inflation year over year. Unless 2021 had a huge jump after being down for 2020 and 2023 is still healthily above 2019 revenue.

8% inflation may be a driving factor. People are having to spend their money on necessities and give up their discretionary spending on sports. I suspect attendance is down even more than 4%, with TV rights and such making up most of the difference.

I'm not sure what the SEC's revenue consists of. Obviously tons of revenue from TV and other media. I would assume the TV revenue is mostly fixed and the other media is variable. But I wouldn't have thought either of thsoe would be negatively impacted.

THe other big one would be ticket revenue from conference tournaments/championships. I would assume that would be up over 2021, which was presumably more impacted by COVID concerns.

Merchandise? I would think that would be dwarfed by TV and other media.

Of course doing worse in the NCAA basketball tournament could get pretty significant pretty quick. An extra 3 teams in the Sweet 16 might be enough to more than cover the entire gap. An extra team in the football playoffs might cover a big portion of it. Not sure if the SEC uses a calendar or school year and don't remember how the SEC did overall across those two years.
