Would be Bill Walsh
Don Coryell
Mike Leach
Emory Bellard

I guess I'm lucky to be a MSU fan.

All solid options. What about Alex Gibbs? I know he didn't invent it, but don't a lot of NFL teams basically use his version of zone blocking?

Is there a "father of the spread"? Just trying to think of who has come up with offensive principles/systems that teams have basically had to copy they were so potent.

Bill Yeoman/Houston invented the veer offense in 1965.

I went with head coaches only. The spread has so many variations it's hard for me to say. You have Chip Kelly, Rich Rodriguez, Urban Meyer- all very good and somewhat different with similar ideas.

But here's what's crazy. In 1981, we went 7-4 with losses to Missouri 14-3; Alabama 13-10; USM 7-6; and OM 21-17.
We had one of the best defenses in the nation and several offensive weapons including John Bond, Glen Young, Michael Haddix, Danny Knight, Donald Ray King.
Bellard chose to play the whole season conservatively and rely on the defense to win the game.
If he had opened up the offense just a little bit we could very well have been undefeated.

Clearly, the answer should be:

John L. Smith
Woody McCorvey
George E. Allen
Kirk Ferentz
