STARKVILLE ? This is what Mike Leach envisioned when he joined Mississippi State football. When the 2023 season kicks off, he'll have three four-star quarterbacks on his roster behind an experienced Will Rogers.

That could change if Rogers declares for the 2023 NFL Draft, which most mocks suggest he shouldn't, or if he, Sawyer Robertson or Braedyn Locke enter the transfer portal. But as things sit, with Ravenwood four-star Chris Parson's recent commitment, Leach will have what he imagined.

Mississippi State has a chain of quarterbacks who can develop under the guy in front of them, redshirt their true freshman seasons and ensure the Bulldogs don't experience 2020 again.

Leach's reputation is built on offensive success led by a veteran quarterback. True freshman Will Rogers leading MSU two years ago was not how Leach operates.

After a couple of seasons with Rogers under center, 2022 begins a cycle of how Leach prefers things. Rogers will be the starter this season and next if he elects to return. Robertson would be the assumed starter in 2024. Then, the competition begins.

QB TALK: Leach saying Robertson could start is coach speak, but a good sign

Scenario 1: If Robertson turns into the quarterback his high school potential suggested, he should forego his redshirt-senior season in 2025.

Locke would be a redshirt-junior and Parson a redshirt-sophomore. State has two more seasons of Parson in its pocket if he isn't ready and Locke is determined the starter.

Scenario 2: If Robertson returns for the 2025 season, it'll be because he has the starting job secured. That leaves Mississippi State with a difficult decision between Locke and Parson.

Entering 2026, Locke would be a redshirt-senior and Parson a redshirt-junior. In this scenario, if Locke is the starter, MSU is banking on just one season with Parson under center. It's unlikely in this scenario either Locke or Parson doesn't enter the transfer portal.

Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers (2) throws against Vanderbilt during the first quarter at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021.
Scenario 3: This is the best scenario for each quarterback behind Rogers. If Rogers has a standout 2022 campaign and leaves for the NFL, Robertson is QB1 for two seasons.

Locke would get the 2025 campaign. If it's successful, he could keep the position in 2026. If not, Parson has two seasons as the starter secured.

Scenario 4: This would be the anomaly, but if Rogers elected to use his extra COVID year and return as MSU's starter in 2024, it would be a packed room.

There would be nine years in Starkville between the four, and it would leave the three behind Rogers with one year as starter in their redshirt-senior season. In this case, it's highly likely someone transfers.

With the transfer portal, trying to project depth charts more than a year out (particularly for QB's) is an exercise in folly.

Highly ranked QB's expect to play, and play pretty quickly. Given that there's only on QB on the field at a time, and it's not a position that gets rotated a lot, most will not be able to coexist (like Dillon and Marks, for example).

There will be competition, it'll shake out how is shakes out, whoever doesn't win will probably transfer.

This is why you have to stack QB's, every single year, in recruiting. Particularly for a guy like Leach.

As far as I'm concerned, you don't worry about backups, you just stockpile talent, and whoever bubbles up bubbles up.

Will Rogers will be back in 2023

Spring 2023 Sawyer robertson will transfer to another power 5 school and possibly start for them

Robertson would start for Auburn in Game 1 this season if he was at auburn

Coach probably isn't changing his system, but it will give him a Quarterback with better ability to avoid getting sacked.

This is why plug and play systems are a thing right now. Take the pissers for example the head coach makes all the play calls and the qb only has to at most make like 1-2 reads every other play. It?s easy for a transfer qb that has never seen that system to be bought and plug and play. The head coach isn?t going anywhere and he is the play caller. It?s easy money and doesn?t take half the skill that a qb needs and to mature into to function at a high level like Leach?s offense does. But that?s also why those qbs fizzle out quickly. But I guess they made their money and don?t care. To each their own.

Noticed Greek wasn't even listed in top 4 on yesterday's depth chart. First QB in transfer portal?

I remember when Greek was way ahead of Sawyer. The light must have come on for Sawyer over the last year.

Nice.

On the last BY Steve was saying Sawyer would see some meaningful playing time in some games this year. Leach is ready to get him out there and see some action.

I'm 99% sure that Leach isn't changing his system. Parson is a good fit though. Leach has his system of evaluating QB's and he won't deviate from that- nor should he given the success he has had. Parson on the surface seems to have the traits that he values- seems like a good leader, is accurate, and has the potential to read defenses well. He has a great arm and is mobile but those are really bonuses.

Barring an injury to Will I'll believe that when I see it. Unless we're considering the fourth quarter of a blow out meaningful playing time.

If you remember what happened was Greek enrolled early while Sawyer played baseball and wanted to do senior year high school things. That's the biggest reason why Greek was ahead of Sawyer this time last year.

Definitely 4th quarter blowouts.

That makes sense now.
