No, but he has been coaching since 2004 and has been an associate head coach at Kentucky from 2014 to 2020 and then has been in the NBA for a couple years.

I know he interviewed with MS State in 2012 but he has a lot more experience since then. I am sure he learned a lot with recruiting and being associate HC at KY for years. This could be a good hire for them.

Not sure how to look at this since they are in-state rivals. Is it - Ha Ha I took your coach...or, your assistant coach is better than our head coach.

Maybe with NIL they think his recruiting will be good enough to take the risk on the coaching?

I kind of lean the opposite way. Now that pay can be funneled through NIL deals, I think that may make coaches like Payne less necessary.
