So saddened to hear of the passing of Harvey ?the headhunter? Hull. No. 99 was one of MSU football?s very best. I was proud to know him. I have some really good memories of Harvey with me and my late brother. RIP Harvey....you were one of the best.

Most on ED have not a clue about Harvey Hull and how great he was. I can see #99 lined up over the center in that extremely low stance and blasting thru the gap of the center and guard before they could barely get a hand on him. He was so quick and explosive, not many could do and play like Harvey Hull! Do Doubt one of the all-time greats!
RIP Harvey

I remember Boy Tyler had some kind of formal dinner to recognize one of his team in Jackson. They were all dressed up in tuxes and HH stood out because he was sporting maroon socks with his tux...small thing but I never forgot that picture.

Pretty sure he was one of the first African American kids Bob Tyler signed, along with Ray Costic, Walter Packer, et al. He was really a good player.

Damn. Can't believe I missed that. Thank you.

I remember standing next to a chain link fence when we beat Jim Kelly & Miami and he was chased out of bounds so fast he braced himself against the fence where I was and I got in his face and yelled "Your Lucky!!" Pretty sure it was Cooks who almost nailed him. I'd bet money he would remember me doing that because I was less than a foot away on other side of the fence.

Robert Bell and Frank Downings were the first AA to sign for Msu. Both were great guys! (Coach Shira was HC)

Were we not the first to either start or give a snap to a Black QB in the SEC?

Melvin Barker signed in same class as Rockey Felker, 1970. I think Holloway from Tn was the first to start.

Melvin Barkum from Gulfport. He and Rocky split time at QB on the Frosh team. Je had a brother Jerome who played at JSU and then the TE for the Jets.

Correct. My memory's coming back . TN was first to start a black QB but we gave the first snap. No?

I’d say this is the answer. I think Melvin played QB in 72 season but not sure he played before Holloway.

18: Condredge Holloway, Tennessee 1972-74. The first African-American to start at quarterback in the SEC, Condredge Holloway won acclaim throughout the league for his outstanding play as a runner, passer and leader.

I think both MSU and Tennessee played black QBs on the same Saturday in '72, but Tennessee being in the Eastern time zone, Holloway played earlier in the day. But Barkum alternated snaps at QB with Rocky Felker later that same day.

I think that is how everything played out. At least that is how my dad remembered it when he told me about it.

Loved those Thursday afternoon games at Scott Field watching the Bullpups!!! Best uniforms we ever had. Just like Texas except no name on front. These were what the Adidas redo?s were supposed to look like on the Flying M logo but the stripes were to damn thick. I know. Had Sammy Milner?s white one.

Also we were playing Bama in Jackson on a Saturday nite double header?. Old Piss played that afternoon ? anyway Bama ran the wishbone? Harvey ran to his right and actually caught the pitch from the QB and scored a Touchdown. Place went nuts. Cooks wore #99 because of Harvey Hull. His name needs to be in the Stadium. He was that good.

Great stuff. Brought back bad Liberty Bowl memories though when Sleepy's pitch was picked by a fast air force white dude who took it to the house.

I was just posting something you reminded me of because those years are the first ones I remember. Basedog can't be David Smith cuz David went to the Browns in '71. Would not have mentioned name had the years matched. I'm sure Basedog knew Smith.

#11 wasn?t he?

One of my fondest childhood memories was running routes while Dad passed to me calling me "The Next David Smith." Back then we played tackle football in the yard as kids and I always had the best hands. Not only did I not grow enough later to play, I was slow and white.

I remember Nicholson, good player, I don't recall Collins. I was good friends with Glenn Ellis (FG kicker who came also as a TE) who was from Biloxi, we both were married and lived by each other.

It was Sam Nichols/ He later became a General.
